Thank-you so much for this excellent information - all of you. This
information is being used to produce a report by a young high school
student, whose project started out as an academic exercise and then quickly
became a facination. I'm thinking she has become somewhat of a bird enthusiast
- we'll see.I try to obtain a copy of her final draft.Regards,Fran.--- On Tue

Subject: RE: Invitation to join a workshop to Reassess the Conservation Status of the Birds of Manitoba
From: "Duncan, James \(CON\)" <JDuncan AT gov.mb.ca>
Date: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 17:08:41 -0500
Hello Folks,

Ken De Smet, Ron Bazin and I are coordinating a reassessment of the
conservation status of the birds of Manitoba.

Please consider helping us in this reassessment by reviewing the conservation
ranks and ranking criteria in the comfort of your own home or office, and/or by
attending a reassessment workshop to be held in Winnipeg from 8:30-4:30 on 5
October 2005.

The ranking process is that used by the Manitoba Conservation Data Centre and
the resulting ranks help set conservation priorities in Manitoba, Canada and
the world. You can see some examples of their use by searching for bird species
information on the following websites:

http://www.especessauvages.ca/
http://www.natureserve.org/explorer/

The schedule for the reassessment process is:

28 September - distribution of files by email to reassessment participants
5 October - reassessment workshop (Winnipeg location)
12 October - last day to submit comments
26 October - wrap up of results

Please email me directly at jduncan AT gov.mb.ca if you like to participate and
provide me with:

1. Your name, address, phone number, email

2. Indicate if you want to participate by reviewing email documents and/or the
workshop

Thank you for considering this request for assistance.

Cheers, Jim

Try looking up a "Blue Bellied Roller". In birds references and online that is
where they refer you to look for a blue bellied parrot.

good luck

Subject: St Vital sparrows
From: "christian artuso" <chartuso AT hotmail.com>

A walk in Saint Vital Park this morning exhibited something of a chaging of
a guard with sparrow species outnumbering warbler species for probably the
first time this year in the park (though i haven't visited every single
day).

A good number of Fox Sparrows had moved in overnight along with the usual
crowd of White-throats and Juncos. Also present were a few Lincoln's,
Chipping, and Clay-coloured as well as my first Harris's and White-crowned
Sparrows of the season.

Over the past week i have been accustomed to seeing 4 - 6 warbler species on
a walk to the park but today i could only find the ubiquitous Yellow-rumps
along with a few Palm's and a Common Yellowthroat.

Subject: Morden Area
From: "David Charriere" <dmcharr AT mts.net>
Date: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 18:31:13 -0000
I spent a couple of hours this morning birding, it didn't turn out
to be a extremely birdy day, but there were a couple of nice
highlights.
First surprise of the day was a loose flock of American Pipits
hanging around the lagoon on the east side of Morden. Can't
complain about a lifer on a windy (but otherwise beautiful) fall
day. Also on the lagoons were alot of Northern Shovellers, Mallards
and smaller numbers of Blue-winged Teal. Ruddy Duck was present as
well as Horned Grebe and Pied-billed Grebe. Shorebirds consisted of
Kildeer, Solitary Sandpiper and Greater Yellowlegs. Other species
were there but remain unidentified due to my being optically
challenged. Sadly, I don't own a spotting scope.
On the west side of Morden, at the marshy west end of lake
Minnewasta, I finally got to see a Great Egret this year. Observed
it hunting for a nice long time. Also seen on or above the lake:
Sharp-shinned Hawk, American Kestral, Double-crested Cormorant,
Lesser yellowlegs and most of the ducks seen at the lagoon.
Woodland birds were few and far between, Dark-eyed Junco and House
Wren being the only ones to make their presence known to me.

The only berry-like things around here are rosehips and hawthorn haws.
Both the saskatoons and the chokecherries were a washout. We also have
a few wild gooseberry bushes, but I only found one gooseberry. I'll
look more closely at the dogwoods and snowberry bushes, which are both
usually very reliable.

I was surprised as well when fifteen or so Cedar Waxwings spent three
consecutive days completely clearing our Mountain Ash last week. Unfortunately
the action seemed so feverish three of them flew into our window pane in about
a span of 30 minutes. I tried the paper bag revival technique to no avail;they
were dead before they hit the ground. Their size would indicate all three of
them were small first year birds.Regards,Fran GiesbrechtOn Mon 09/26,

While up north fishing in Wekusko Lake near Snow Lake, we saw a number
of small flocks of geese flying south. Much to our amazement, a pair
of eagles began attacking a goose and brought it nearer and nearer to
the top of the trees circling it and tring to bring it down.

The goose saw our boats, and landed right beside us, seeking refuge.
It was a blue, and after swimming around us for a half hour, it saw a
window of safety as the eagles left, and it flew away. It was an quite
a remarkable event to witness.

Strolling the riverwalk at the Forks late this evening , two Great Blue Herons
on the far shore of the Assiniboine River . Both were ( successfully ) fishing
under the moonlight / city lights . Standing on the footbridge to the
SouthPoint a little later , one flew under the bridge towards the Red and
resumed wading / fishing right at the historic confluence .

Morning All, I'm a Saskbirder from Estevan. I just completed a wander
through Southwestern Manitoba and found 3 great egrets at Melita. As of
Friday afternoon, two were in a flooded field south of town, between hwy
#3 and the river (the low lying area that commonly floods). There's
also one snow goose at this location. The third egret was in the marsh
east of town, north of the railroad tracks. It was a brief glimpse only
as the bird walked into the reeds and out of my line of vision from the
highway. The area between Melita and Medora has a lot of sandhill cranes.

The Deloraine town campground has a resident great horned owl. I heard
it throughout the night (Tuesday) I stayed there. The campground
manager said there was an owl nesting this spring.

The following day I found another great horned owl at Binney's Corner
nature preserve west of Manitou. I was fortunate enough to witness a
skirmish between this owl and an osprey. The osprey flew off out of the
area after a second attack failed. The owl moved deeper into the grove
of trees and probably got a trifle irritated with me as I walked around
the area. It was obviously a resident of the place. There were several
brown thrashers being very vocal and not particularly shy.

We still have the wood ducks hanging around. Its been a real pleasure watching

teals and lots of mallards. The late hatches are growing.

I thought I'd run up Highway 518 from Woodlands to
the point where it's still washed out.. (10km north).
I haven't gone this way for a while.

The birdwatching was pretty sparse.. There were
a few common ducks and coots in the ditches and
some Canada geese on one of the fields.

Of course I saw five great egrets which seem to
be ever present in this area and a couple of
great blue herons. (You can't take this trip
without seeing herons and egrets :-)

The only highlight of the outing was coming across
a male and female pileated woodpecker pair digging
for bugs on a power pole. I don't see them often and
this is the first time I've seen two together.

I managed a quick photo before they flew off.

According to The Birds of Manitoba , most Swainson's Hawks depart by the third
week of September . Yesterday afternoon I saw a single adult Swainson's at the
Lagimodiere/Concordia overpass , which would put this bird right on the line
between departing and straggling . Swainson's have been quite regular through
the summer along this stretch of Lagimodiere Blvd/Hwy # 59 up to and beyond the
north Perimiter Hwy .

The fields directly north-east of the Lag/Concordia overpass held a number of
prairie species early this summer . Le Conte's , Clay-coloured and Savannah
Sparrows were easy to hear and view from Peguis St , which runs along the east
side of these fields .

After several days of immature Harris' and White-crowned around the garden , an
adult White-crowned joined the zono crowd this morning .

Hi All:

Yesterday (Sept. 19) I was at Whitewater Lake with Blake Maybank and Ian
McLaren from Nova Scotia. Near the viewing tower we saw two White-faced
Ibis and one Great Egret. There were a few Cattle Egrets but no Snowy
Egrets. There were very few ducks or grebes to be found due,
presumably, to the hunters that were there. Even the Coots were very
nervous and flew as soon as one approached.

Along road 14N between Boissevain and Whitewater Lake we counted 86
Cattle Egrets in one flock.

Ian reported that on Sept. 18 he had seen a male Cinnamon Teal on the
east side of Hwy. 34 where it crosses the east end of Swan Lake. We
checked the area when we were returning from Whitewater Lake but were
unable to find the bird.

Cheers,

Gord

Saw a Green Heron at Fort Whyte Monday, September 19, about 3:45 p.m..
It appeared in the Lake with the long boardwalk just north of the most
southern lake. As I walked the northern section of the boardwalk the
bird flew past me with neck extended and landed on a nest box for Wood
Ducks very near the southern shore of the lake. Upon my approaching the
bird for a closer view it flew into the nearby reeds along the shore
just east of where the boardwalk ends.

Peter Fast.

The bird in question is a female Northern Flicker. It is indeed a
woodpecker, although it spends much of its time foraging on the ground,
especially for ant eggs and larvae. At this time of the year many flickers
migrate through southern Manitoba, to return again in April. More
information on the status of this handsome bird in the province can be found
in The Birds of Manitoba, available from the Manitoba Naturalists Society.
Cheers,
Rudolf Koes,

Howdy,

The bird in the picture is, in fact, a woodpecker. It is a Northern Flicker
and they are commonly found on the ground feeding on ants and insects they
find in people's lawns.

We were there Sat. The birds are very skittish because of the hunters. We
walked out to the observation tower and basically saw bitterns, coots. grebes
and some ducks. We had lunch in the parking lot and egrets were flying in but
the guns scared them away. There seemed to be guns blasting every half hour.
The hunters were along the dykes. We didn,t see the Ibis.

suggest getting a clump of red willow{red-osier dogwood}.I have a good sized
bush out side our kitchen window and in the last few day`s there has been
Robins, catbird, flicker, red eyed vireo, swainson thrush and white throated
sparrows eating the white berries. It is easy to grow.

Walking to work on the east side of the lake at Minnedosa at about
1:30 today, I first heard, then saw a huge group of sandhill cranes.
The ones I saw were in 2 separate groups each one at least 25 or 30.
I went in to the office, telling my brother to take a look. He said
there were several more groups further in the distance and he
estimated there were at least a few hundred birds. By the calling, it
would seem there were that many.

Hello,
The closest I can come is Carolina Wren, although the colour of the
underparts doesn't fit.
Could you please identify yourself by name, so that I (we) can reply
properly. I would be interested in hearing more about this bird, especially
if it sticks around, and any photograph would be welcome, no matter how poor
the quality is.
Cheers,

with me coming quite close to him. I have added the pics in the photo
section under Ev.

We spotted a red-headed woodpecker at Grand Beach in June, so it could!

Subject: li'l help here....
From: "birdzruleone" <birdzruleone AT yahoo.ca>

Can anyone help a rookie identify a bird? Only bad, undeveloped
photos have been taken, and I've gone through 5 birdbooks
unsuccessfully! The bird's been in the Grand Beach area for a month.

Here goes. It only visits the suet feeder for 5 seconds; never the
seed feeder or seed platform. Sometimes it perches on top of the
feeder with its tail in an upright position like a house wren.

It's bigger than a house wren and smaller than a whitebreasted
nuthatch. It's thin, not round, and the tail looks long and skinny.
The upperside is solid rust coloured, not brown. The underside is
whitish with darker (rust?) splotches. The top of the head is dark
followed by a white band . Then a dark band through the eye. The
chin is the same whitish as the underside. No eye ring.

The legs are dark flesh coloured. The beak is not a thick triangle.
It's on the longer side, and I had the impression that it may have a
slight downward curve. Help!!! Thanks for your patience.

Northern Cardinals: The female is still visiting the seed feeder
and bird bath, and the male was last seen September 9th.

Immature Redheaded Woodpecker?: Believe this is what I was watching
for about 10 minutes on a lakefront tree. Perched like a woodpecker,
and repeatedly flew off the tree, performed a halfcircle loop, and
returned to the same spot. Had a dark head, white underside that
carried on under the wings, and the ends of wings were solid dark.
When flying, the upperside was also the same white with dark wing
ends. Wasn't a downy/hairy/flicker looking bird.

Subject: re migration continues

Hello all,
As Garry Budyk mentioned, today was excellent for watching migrants,
particularly warblers, in East Kildonan. The cold front that moved through in
the last two days, plus the overcast and damp conditions this morning, was
responsible for this. During two walks in the neighbourhood (Frasers Grove Park
and Kildonan Drive) I saw 17 species of warbler, including a Golden-winged.
About 12 Ovenbirds occupied a forest floor area of about 30 x 30 m behind Angus
Mackay School, with a few more elsewhere. Also had a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher.

Cheers,
Rudolf Koes,
Winnipeg.

Just a load of birds moving through this afternoon . Dozens of warblers in 11
species ; empids and flickers , finches in purple and gold . A dozen
white-throats , clay-col , chippie and song , and a somewhat early Fox Sparrow
. House Wrens darting about , and a 1st year Baltimore Oriole . Blue-head and
ruby-crown . A massive bloom of winged aphids , feeding the hungry . Ovenbird
marches about , a Yellow-rump moves back and forth along the length of the
eaves on the garage , picking aphids . Bay-breasted and Palm make 13 . A
Sapsucker shows up . The goldfinches find the drooping sunflower heads . 90
minutes have passed . The hordes persist . The Oriole returns , Swainson`s
shows it`s face . Black and white makes 14 . A Merlin silently passes by . Two
hours now , and the birds are thinning out . Geese pass overhead , a
chickadee-dee-dees .

Migration continues .

Cheers,
Garry Budyk
