Radnor Lake
Davidson Co.
While walking along the road at Radnor Lake this morning, I spotted a very
early migrating Winter Wren. It sang feebly as it practiced several short
phrases, instead of singing its long, warbling song.

Subject: Mourning Warbler, Lewis CountyFrom: Bill Pulliam <bb551 AT bellsouth.net> Date: Thu, 2 Sep 2010 07:54:35 -0500 A Mourning Warbler at my place in western Lewis County this morning
(9/02/2010) is my first of the season and only the second autumn bird
I've found in my 8 years here. It's in the yellow-throated immature
plumage, of course, one of the most "unmarked" of all the plain fall
warblers. E-bird data suggest this is also a fairly early date for
the species; but there aren't many fall records (only 12 others,
earliest Sept. 5). Given the rather strong resemblance of a fall
Mourning to a slightly oversized fall Common Yellowthroat, both in
plumage and behavior, they are easy to overlook.

Subject: Re: Laughing Gulls, Buff-br. Sandpipers, Sanderlings -
Douglas Lake/RankinFrom: Ben Britton <benbrdn AT hotmail.com> Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2010 20:26:46 +0000 Sept. 1, (Wed): Cocke Co., Rankin and Dutch Bottoms.
Made a swing through Rankin bottoms and then continued on to Dutch bottoms to
the area where Jim had seen the gulls. Both of the Immature Laughing gulls were
still present with apprx 95 Ring-billed gulls. They flushed when I first exited
my vehicle but soon returned to the shore where I could observe them w/ my
7X35. There was not much more activity in this section of the lake, but I did
have 48 additional species at Rankin bottoms.
Highlights included a lesser Yellowlegs (no scope for other shorebirds) and 4
warbler species. (N.Waterthrush, Prothonitary, Yellow warbler, and
C.Yellowthroat.) The water is slowly going down, but a scope is still needed
for maximum viewing. I am hoping to return Sat. (9-4) for the TOS outing.
Been birding?

> Highlights today from Douglas Lake/Rankin bottoms late this afternoon/early
evening were 2 juv. Laughing Gulls together amongst Ring-bills along the
shoreline of Douglas Lake at the same spot I the one bird was
yesterday--opposite and just a little north of where Rankin Hill Rd. T's into
Rt. 32/25E. For the most part both birds similar in plumage although one was a
bit further along into 1st-basic (winter) plumage, having a few dark gray
feathers coming in on the mantle and wings, while the other bird (and
apparently the same one from yesterday) appeared to be in full juv. plumage. No
sign of the Avocet.
>
> Rankin Bottoms was hopping with shorebirds with the water level appearing to
have gone down roughly 5-10 ft. from yesterday, exposing fresh flats, and with
a clear increase in the #s of shorebirds after last nights clear skies--at
least 200+ were present (with the most numerous being Killdeer and Semipalmated
Sandpiper). Highlights included 3 Buff-breasted Sandpipers and 2 Sanderlings
(ad. and juv. together). Most of the birds were on the main shoreline flat that
would have been straight out and slightly right (south?) from the railroad
crossing on Hill Rd., while there were also a lot of distant birds that were
barely identifiable at 60x futher out on a long spit. When I left this evening
a train was parked blocking the road, although luckily I parked on the opposite
side, but just a heads up.
>
> Earlier in the morning a walk on the Harmon Loop trail at Norris Dam State
Park in Anderson? Co. turned up a nice group of Warblers that included 6+
Black-and-Whites, 4 Blackburnians, 3 Hooded, Chestnut-sided, Ovenbird, 2
Worm-eating, and single Kentucky, Canada, and Tennessee Warblers.

Subject: LOVE MY HUMMERSFrom: "BirdsandTrails" <BirdsandTrails AT comcast.net> Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2010 16:07:06 -0400 TN-Birders:
For about a week my numbers of
adult male Ruby-throats
seemed to be down.
However, I wasn't spending as much time where I could see the feeders or the
patio flower bed
For two days I saw no more than one adult male at a time. Then I was seeing no
more than four adult males at a time.
For three days I have been spending more time looking out windows and have been
astonished to see more adult males. This morning I concentrated and twice
counted fifteen adult males in one field of vision - from one window.
I still have hundreds of the gorgeous rubies.
I haven't been sitting on the patio
but when I walk out to water flowers
they fly so close to me that frequently their wings touch my hair and cheeks.
It used to remind me of Beatty's controlled access feeders in Miller Canyon -
AZ.
While we are limited to Ruby-throats
the numbers of individual hummers are greater here.
When I return a clean/ filled feeder (I have nine feeders up) they are all
around me waiting for that feeder to be put back up.

TVA Lake and
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN
The "Pits" are still dry and practically void of birds. There are about
1,500 Least Sandpipers roosting on one of the ash flats at the TVA Plant but
too far away to make any other small species ID. A single adult
Black-bellied Whistling Duck rested on TVA Lake with the Mallards and Geese;
the first
Whistler I've seen there in over a week. The leucistic Mallard has been
hanging out there for 3 weeks.
I walked back into Horn Lake Slough to check on some birds I had suspected
were nesting on the only water available and flushed an adult Black-necked
with at least 4 youngsters, not quite able to fly. They should show up at
TVA Lake soon.

Subject: Hot PursuitFrom: "Van Harris" <shelbyforester1223 AT bigriver.net> Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2010 07:33:57 -0700 I took the dogs out early this morning for our walk around the neighborhood
here in nw Shelby County. As we turned for home, I heard the stacatto
yelping of a Pileated Woodpecker coming from the woods nearby. I glanced up
just in time to see the crow-sized picarian shoot across the road hotly
pursued by a very determined Ruby-thorated Hummingbird. If hummingbirds
were the size of Pileated Woodpeckers, it would not be safe to walk in the
woods. Van Harris Millington, TN

Subject: Migrants - KnoxFrom: kde AT angst.engr.utk.edu Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2010 10:23:51 -0400 (EDT)
It's been a busy summer with little time for birding, even in the
back yard. Have managed to pick up a few migrants passing through
this month including 6 warbler species, mostly local breeders
dispersing. Today was by far the best with the first multi-warbler-
species day (3 first of fall). List follows for about 30 min
spent birding in the backyard (west Knox Co) starting around 7:15AM
today (31 Aug 2010).
-- Tennessee Warbler, FOF, at least 1 very actively foraging (always
a good omen to see one before the first UT game)
-- Black-and-White Warbler, 2
-- Cerulean Warbler, 1 FOF
-- Magnolia Warbler, 1 FOF
-- Red-eyed Vireo, 1

Subject: Smithsonian Magazine features Ivory Bill article by Stephen Lyn Bales of Knox CoFrom: Viclcsw AT aol.com Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2010 23:38:36 EDT For those who haven't seen it yet, take a look at the September issue of
Smithsonian Magazine. TOS member and Knoxville, TN (Knox County) resident
Stephen Lyn Bales wrote the article describing new Ivory-bill nestling
images discovered during his research for his upcoming book, Ghost Birds. Fun
images and story. Below is a link to my blog post describing more with link
to the article.
And more fun stuff. The article is currently ranked as "the most popular"
Smithsonian article todate and the No. 1 emailed article on the website.

An Eared Grebe in summer plumage was seen this evening
from Musick's Campground on the stateline of Tennessee
and Virginia. The species has over wintered here since the
mid 1990's.
Let's go birding . . .

Subject: Anderson County migrantsFrom: Carole Gobert <cpgobert AT hotmail.com> Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2010 20:47:12 -0400 At the Songbird Trail of the Norris Dam State Park in Anderson County this
morning:
2 immature female Chestnut Sided Warblers
2 Black and White Warblers
1 Magnolia Warbler
1 Blue-Winged Warbler
1 Yellow-throated Vireo
I encounterd Shane Williams who said he'd had a Canada Warbler but I missed
that one.
Other notable birds were 3 singing White-eyed Vireos, a Great-Crested
Flycatcher, an Acadian Flycatcher, an Eastern Wood Pewee. 2 Double-Crested
Cormorants flying upriver (don't see them at Norris often). 5 Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds (no adult males).
I watched begging behavior in a presumed fledgling Red-eyed Vireo as it pursued
another Red-eyed Vireo (presumably its parent).
On the way home I stopped at the Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery in Clinton (Anderson
County) for a quick drive-through. The Great Egret was at the same location I
saw it last week, on one of the canals on the right as you drive in. And,
finally, a Northern Harrier flew low across a field and into the small trees to
the west of the hatchery. I watched it for several seconds as it flew... a
brown hawk with a conspicuous white rump.

The numbers here in Overton Co are still strong. About 7 cups out of 2
feeders a day. I am seeing a few males, not more then 2 or 3 at a time out
of an estimated 25-30 at one time.

Subject: Loggerhead ShrikeFrom: Tony King <tonykingbird AT yahoo.com> Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2010 19:16:14 -0700 (PDT) Meredith Clebsch has done it again! At about 3 pm today she called with
directions to locate a second shrike for this week.
This one was in our bins by 3:40 pm.
The bird is in the area of Loudon Co. where Axley Chapel , East Tellico
Parkway & National Campground roads meet. On the former rd. about 0.25 miles
from the a/m intersection there is a gravel driveway to the right going up hill
through a grassy field. The shrike was first spotted in the nearest dead tree
to
the right of the gravel driveway. Then it flew to the top of metal fence posts
over to the right. The next time we saw it was in the top of a large Tulip
Poplar tree across the road . There we watched it devour a large insect, after
which it began to preen !
Fabulous week thanks to Meredith!

from 5:45 to 6:15 pm and again at 7:30 pm. When I first found it, it was
working its way west along the wire. It also seems to like a honey locust
tree near Marble Hill. At 7:30 the bird was in the field to the west of
Marble Hill Rd. I managed to take some pictures through my binoculars but of
course the quality is poor. This is the best one:

I looked out this morning and my dead tree was full of male Rubythroats! I
could only guess how many there were. They were all trying to kill each other!
I just refilled the feeders and they are busy drinking and attacking. I have
seen very few females lately. I would estimate at least 30 males were sitting
in the tree. This happens about this time each year-males only.

North Treatment Plant,
TVA Lake and Ensley
Shelby Co. TN
The North Treatment ponds are full of water forcing the few birds into the
weeds. A single, molting adult Black Tern came in for a little rest in the
early morning. At TVA Lake, the DC Cormorants, Canada Geese, Mallards and
16 feeding Northern Shovelers were all I could find until about 12:30 and
then I almost missed a Marbled Godwit that snuck into the feeding Shovelers;
that is one BIG Wind Bird.......
Over at the "Pits", mostly Least with a sprinkling of Semi-sands on the dry
beds but a nice immature Buff-breasted was found on the spread fields west
of the ponds. These birds just blend in and are DIFFICULT to find in those
clods. Photos start at:

I ended going down to Mississippi where I found one of the oddest
shorebirds I ever seen. I'll post some photos later.

Subject: NTOS Field Trip resultsFrom: "Candice & Kevin" <ethden AT gmail.com> Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2010 16:31:19 -0500 Peeler Park/Old Hickory Dam Area
Nashville-Davidson County, TN
Saturday 28 August, 2010
The Nashville Chapter of TOS sponsored a Field Trip this morning to Peeler
Park at Neely's Bend, Nashville-Davidson County, with a subsequent side trip
to the Old Hickory Dam area. Peeler Park was heavily inundated last May in
the flooding. Little evidence remains today; the fields were covered with
late summer flowers, most notably Ironweed (Vernonia Altissima), which
seemed ubiquitous.
We did not see as many early fall migrants as we had hoped for, but we did
get a good look at a MAGNOLIA WARBLER. Fifteen WILD TURKEYS greeted us near
the park entrance by flying away just over the tops of the field vegetation.
RED-EYED VIREOS were still singing from treetops and two vocal NORTHERN
PARULAS got our attention as well. COMMON GRACKLES moved about in large
flocks, making an accurate count a bit difficult. Also numerous were INDIGO
BUNTINGS of both sexes in various plumages.
Here's a list of species observed. With the exception of a BLUE HERON
flyover at Peeler, all shore and water birds were seen at Old Hickory as
were the CHIMNEY SWIFTS and BARN SWALLOWS.

Subject: Ruddy Turnstones - MemphisFrom: OLCOOT1 AT aol.com Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2010 00:56:47 EDT Aug. 27, 2010
Ensley Bottoms,
TVA Lake,
and North Treatment Plant
Shelby Co. TN
No water = few birds at Ensley but nice First of Season treats. An adult,
male Ruddy Turnstone was found on the dry bed of the large pit and another
molting female was turning clods at TVA Lake. Three Blue-winged Teal and 16
Northern Shovelers indicate more birds are on the way.........Tomorrow!! as
winds are turning and will put new birds on the ground. Cooper's,
Red-shouldered immature, Red-tails and Kestrels kept the few shorebirds birds
stirred up.
At the North Treatment Plant, the opposite problem as they have flooded all
the areas, covering any flats but in the vegetation 2 immature Stilt
Sandpipers were up to their bellies in the deep water.
Still No Sandbars, but the Mississippi will drop a few feet in the next few
days and it looks like it is dropping all the way to St. Louis this time
;o).
Good Birding !!!

Lake/RankinFrom: jmpawli88 AT aol.com Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010 23:13:52 -0400 Just a quick note that at least 1 of yesterday's 2 White-rumped Sandpipers was
present at Rankin today as well.
Jim P.
Highlights today from Douglas Lake/Rankin bottoms late this afternoon/early
vening were 2 juv. Laughing Gulls together amongst Ring-bills along the
horeline of Douglas Lake at the same spot I the one bird was
esterday--opposite and just a little north of where Rankin Hill Rd. T's into
t. 32/25E. For the most part both birds similar in plumage although one was a
it further along into 1st-basic (winter) plumage, having a few dark gray
eathers coming in on the mantle and wings, while the other bird (and apparently
he same one from yesterday) appeared to be in full juv. plumage. No sign of
he Avocet.
Rankin Bottoms was hopping with shorebirds with the water level appearing to
ave gone down roughly 5-10 ft. from yesterday, exposing fresh flats, and with a
lear increase in the #s of shorebirds after last nights clear skies--at least
00+ were present (with the most numerous being Killdeer and Semipalmated
andpiper). Highlights included 3 Buff-breasted Sandpipers and 2 Sanderlings
ad. and juv. together). Most of the birds were on the main shoreline flat that
ould have been straight out and slightly right (south?) from the railroad
rossing on Hill Rd., while there were also a lot of distant birds that were
arely identifiable at 60x futher out on a long spit. When I left this evening
train was parked blocking the road, although luckily I parked on the opposite
ide, but just a heads up.
Earlier in the morning a walk on the Harmon Loop trail at Norris Dam State Park
n Anderson? Co. turned up a nice group of Warblers that included 6+
lack-and-Whites, 4 Blackburnians, 3 Hooded, Chestnut-sided, Ovenbird, 2
orm-eating, and single Kentucky, Canada, and Tennessee Warblers.

Subject: Loggerhead ShrikeFrom: Tony King <tonykingbird AT yahoo.com> Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010 18:41:04 -0700 (PDT) Meredith Clebsch, on her way home from work today 8-23-2010, spotted the a/m
shrike sitting on a power line. She gave us a heads up around 5;30 PM by
phone. Denise & I drove to the site and by 6;15 PM had it in the cross hairs.
The site is on Hwy 321 in Blount Co about 0.3 miles from the Loudon Co line.
Marble Hill road crosses Hwy 321. From there follow the power lines
towardsFriendsville. The shrike was between the second and fourth power
pole. Lighting was too harsh for pictures with our equipment.
We have hunted these birds, for over a year, to no avail, until Merdith's
sighting. I hope it stays in the area.
The reason for this late posting is due to my error by using AOL instead of
YAHOO, now I understand the difference.!?

Subject: Eagle Bend Forster's Tern - 8/26From: "Shane H. Williams" <shanehwilliams AT comcast.net> Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010 17:05:32 -0400
Yesterday, 8/26 I visited eagle Bend Fish Hatchery (Anderson Co.) from 12:50 to
1:40. I spotted what i'm fairly sure was a Forster's Tern at the end of one of
the long narrow ponds to the right of the road. Legs orangy-red, beak mostly
blackish with orange at base of lower beak, breast white, back and wings light
gray w/ primaries slightly darker. The head looked more like my field guide's
winter Common Tern w/ black nape and rear crown w/ speckling of front crown.
When I drove to the upper pond the tern began flying around the narrow ponds
and plunge-diving for ~10 minutes. In flight the primaries did seem lighter
than the rest of wings and back. The head caused some confusion for me but I
guess the lighter primaries make it Forster's. I also read in another guide
when I got home that Common Tern molts later in the year. It returned to it's
original spot just before I left. A Great Egret was in the rear right pond as
well and 3 Green Herons were seen.

As a follow-up to this story, we are looking at possible nest box
options for the owls. Does anyone out there have experience with
Barn Owl nest box placement, use, etc? Anyone know of success
with tree-mounted boxes? I've found some information online which
we are going through now. Feel free to reply to me off-line.

Subject: Couple more warblers, Hampton, TNFrom: ahoodedwarbler AT aol.com Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010 10:15:09 -0400 This morning (Friday, Aug. 27) before leaving for work, there was again mixed
flock activity in the mimosa and willow trees.
The only new species that I had not observed the previous day was a Northern
Parula and a couple of Magnolia Warblers.
Activity is definitely heavy in the morning, but when I get home in the
evenings, it is absolutely dead right now with very little bird activity in the
yard.

Subject: White County Fall Bird CountFrom: Douglas Downs <douglas_downs AT hotmail.com> Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010 08:23:51 -0500 On Saturday, September 18th, we will be conducting our seventh annual White
County Fall Bird Count. If anyone on this list serve would be interested in
participating, please contact me and we can include you in our planning.
Territories and compilation information will be sent to all participants as
soon as our volunteer list is firmed up. If you would like to experience a
count outside your normal area of activities, let me suggest White County as an
excellent choice. We have plenty of territory and an excellent variety of
habitats to challenge a birder of any skill level. We look forward to another
successful count in 2010.

Subject: Inca Dove search, unsuccessful; 8/26/2010From: "Michael & Rebecca Todd" <birder1 AT bellsouth.net> Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2010 22:56:53 -0500 8/26/2010
Lake Co (Cates area)
Just a quick note, Jeff Wilson, Nancy Moore, Mark Greene part of the day, and I
searched long and hard for the Inca Dove Mark found yesterday. We had no
success. Lots of places for an Inca to hang out in this area. Definitely gonna
need a bit of luck on your side on this one! Hopefully it will be seen again
though.
Also in the area today; Alder and Olive-sided Flycatcher and an immature Lark
Sparrow. Fewer shorebirds at Jolly's Landing, basically same species though.
Westerns are gone, Semi Sands are way down, and still no Baird's.
Good Birding!!

Subject: Warblers in Franklin CountyFrom: David Coe <davidbcoe AT dishmail.net> Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2010 22:44:36 -0500 I work at home and throughout the morning have noticed small flocks of
warblers flitting in the oaks outside my window (and then being driven
off by the Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, who don't seem to tolerate any
birds near their feeders).
Flocks have included Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Black-throated Green,
and fall plumage Blackpoll, as well as Yellow-throated Vireo and Red-
eyed Vireos.

Subject: Laughing Gull, Avocet at Douglas Lake, Cocke Co.From: jmpawli88 AT aol.com Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2010 22:34:36 -0400
There was a juvenile Laughing Gull and a basic (winter) plumaged American
Avocet sitting with about 2 dozen Ring-billed Gulls along the shoreline of
Douglas Lake just opposite where Rankin Hill Rd. T's into Route 32/25E this
late morning (Thurs. 8/26). The Laughing Gull I believe I saw earlier in the
morning at Rankin Bottoms flying high overhead heading SW although at the time
I could only get binoculars on it and see that it was a
Laughing/Franklin's-type, neither of which I really expected to see there. Both
birds eventually flew off with the Laughing heading south out over the lake and
the Avocet actually putting down on the water out in the middle of the lake
with most of the Ring-bills. Highlights at Rankin included 2 adult White-rumpd
Sandpipers by themselves at the very south end of the bottoms. Other shorebirds
included 40+ Killdeer, 5+ L. Yellowlegs, Semi Plover, 2+ Semi Sandpipers, 4
Least Sandpipers, 2 Spotted Sandpipers. Other birds at the bottoms were Proth
onotary Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, Pileated Woodpecker, 70+ Great Egrets,
Black-crowned Night-Heron, Black and Turkey Vultures, and 2 Osprey.
I later checked out Panther Creek State Park on the other side of I-81 to the
north and came across a few nice groups of songbirds that included Summer
Tanager, Wood Thrush, Veery, 2 Black-and-White Warblers, Canada Warbler, 2
Hooded Warblers, and American Redstart.

Subject: Sightings Report, 26 August 2010, Hummingbirds by the Numbers, Collierville, Shelby CountyFrom: John Walko <walko AT bellsouth.net> Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2010 17:42:24 -0500 Three weeks ago I had about 1-3 hummers floating about the back yard & porch
around the two feeders.
Since saturday the numbers have been increasing each day. Sunday I had a total
of five feeders out.
Temps dropped to the high 80's low 90's since Tues with hi 60's at night.
Yesterday I put the last two usable feeders that I have out ( Bloody Raccoons
did three others in) on the porch.
Today (430-530pm) I figure I could see anywhere from 12-18 (no adult males) at
anyone time chasing each other, dog fighting, resting and feeding at the
feeders (No more than one at a feeder at a time though) and on the flowers in
the yard. My pink Rose of Sharon has a mild case of Aphids and it seems the
hummers are helping themselves .
I figure theres more in the general one acre vicinity from observing their
flights to and fro. Hopefully they will settle down and let several feed at the
same dinner table.
We still have two weeks before the Strawberry Plains Hummingbird Festival at
the Audubon Center in Holly Springs, MS. Hopefully migration won't peak before
then. Observations here on the back porch over the past couple of years has
been once the peak hits it goes down fast. Looking forward to seeing Bob &
Martha and the Group at the festival and hope they have a bumper crop of
hummers this year.

Today,(8-26) I walked along the horse trail back to the ponds from 1300-1430.
NO LUCK on spoonbill, cattle or snowy egrets. I mainly just wanted to find out
where it was, and make a return trip in morning or evening for better activity.
I have included my e-bird report with the 33 species I did find.

clear, cool
With the passing of the "cold" front yesterday I decided to visit
Radnor Lake on Thursday morning to see what birds had come in.
Pickings were minimal with single individuals of 4 warbler species
BLACK-AND-WHITE, N. PARULA, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and CANADA.
However, at the dam I was treated to great view of a BARRED OWL
perched on a dead branch of the huge tree between the dam and the
ranger's house. Eventually it flew off and was chased by
two hummingbirds.

Subject: Mixed flock with warblers, Hampton, TNFrom: ahoodedwarbler AT aol.com Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2010 13:26:14 -0400
Before leaving for work, I noticed a great deal of bird activity in a Mimosa
tree near my house. As I watched, activity spilled over into nearby willows and
wild cherry trees.
I observed several Chestnut-sided Warblers, a couple of Black-throated Greens,
a female Black-throated Blue, a Worm-eating Warbler and a male Blackburnian
Warbler.
In addition, the mix of birds included Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wrens,
Song Sparrows, Tufted Titmice, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, a Gray Catbird and
Red-eyed Vireo.
I've been seeing Black-throated Green Warblers almost daily for about a week,
but this was the first mixed species flock I have encountered for the "fall"
migration.

Subject: Barn Owls in Knox CoFrom: kde AT angst.engr.utk.edu Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2010 11:02:51 -0400 (EDT)
I've received word and seen photos of a family of BARN OWLs from
west Knox Co. The owls apparently raised a family in a building
which was under construction. Construction was on hold for most
of the summer and the crew discovered the owls when they recently
returned to resume work. The construction site is obviously off
limits to the public so I'm not going to disclose it's location
at the moment. TWRA has been contacted about helping to safely
relocate the owls from the construction site.
Other than the ones released at Seven Islands by the Knoxville
Zoo, this is the only confirmed report of Barn Owls in Knox Co
that I can recall in at least 20 years. One was reported from
Seven Islands on the 2005 Knox Co Spring Count which was the
first reported on any Knox County count (Spring, Fall, or Knoxville
CBC) since 1975.

Subject: Jerry InglesFrom: Laura Jennings McCall <laurajmccall AT earthlink.net> Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2010 20:36:43 -0500 I am saddened to write that Jerry Ingles, long-time TOS member and
friend, died this past weekend at the age of 69. Ruth Luckado asked
me to send out this message, as she is having problems sending out
email. A memorial service for Jerry is planned for this Friday,
August 27, at 12:15 p.m. at All Saints Chapel in Sewanee.
The remainder of this message is the text of what Ruth tried
unsuccessfully to post yesterday.
Laura McCall
Highland Rim TOS
From Ruth:
Jerry Ingles, long-time member of TOS, and "birder extraordinaire,"
died last Friday in Worden, IL. Below is a resume of his professional
career, compiled by Jim Peters, who taught at the University of the
South with Jerry.
> After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of
> California, Berkeley, and his Ph.D. work at Cornell, Jerry Ingles
> joined our faculty at the University of the South in 1978. He had
> also taught at the State University of New York, Oneonta, and served
> as a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Venezuela. During his years
> as a professor, he served for a time as chair of the economics
> department. He was esteemed by colleagues and students for his
> sparkling sense of humor, among other virtues. A member of Phi Beta
> Kappa, he maintained teaching and scholarly interests in economic
> development and planning, as well as in the environmental and other
> implications of agreements among private landowners. His leisure
> activities included bird watching and camping. He retired from the
> faculty in 2006.
However, I feel compelled to add a personal note. Jerry and I birded
together for many years--breeding bird work, special count days, hawk-
watches, et al., and just plain days on our own, just 'cause we loved
it. His knowledge, as well as ID expertise, was precise and thorough
(well, except for the day on Hawk Watch at Sewanee, when we sighted a
Rough-legged Hawk--we conferred and agreed and listed it. About three
years later, Jerry said to me, "Ruth, you remember that Rough-legged
Hawk we had at Sewanee? Well, it was NOT." So we took it off our
list. More research and some trips spent with national experts had
better informed him--but it just emphasized his honesty and
thoroughness in birding).
Jerry didn't miss a day of checking the listings on Tn-Bird. He was an
avid reader of Ol' Coot's listings and took some trips with him for
special sightings. He signed his own listings with, "It has been my
very great fortune to find an incredibly wonderful bird." That bird
was a special friend from his Peace Corps days in S.A., with whom he
had become reacquainted and who brought much joy to the last years of
his life.
I would be remiss not to mention Jerry's keen and unique sense of
humor--a sample of which was a time in Grundy County, when we were
doing work for the Breeding Bird Atlas. He turned to me at the start
of an uphill gravel road and said, "Ruth, the meanest man in the
county lives at the end of this hollow, and he doesn't want us up
there." Needless to say, we might have left the Atlas short of a
couple of birds that day, but we may have also missed a few bullets.
His death saddens me, but so many memories of our birding friendship
will enliven my life the rest of my days.
With thanksgiving,
Ruth Luckado

Subject: Inca Dove in Lake County, TN!From: Mark Greene <greenesnake AT yahoo.com> Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2010 14:28:09 -0700 (PDT) Wednesday, August 25, 2010
Cates, Lake County
This afternoon at approximately 1:30 pm I had an Inca Dove at the NW corner of
the community of Cates in Lake County. I had just finished scoping shorebirds
from the levee at Jolly’s Landing and was traveling south on the levee road.
Just as I was about to turn off of the levee onto a paved road at the Cates
community an Inca Dove flushed from the road and flew across in front of me and
landed on a bulldozer brush pile with some Mourning Doves. I finally located it
sitting low on the backside of a brush pile and was able to view the bird for a
couple of minutes through the scope before it went down lower and I lost it
behind some tall weeds. I did not see it flush again (nor did any of the
Mourning Doves it was with) during the time I was there. I waited approximately
20 minutes and never saw the bird again. When the bird flushed in front of me I
noticed it was a small dove with chestnut wings and my first thought was Common
Ground-Dove but then I noticed the longer tail and I stopped and was able to
view it through my binoculars as it flew approximately 75 yards and landed.
Through the binoculars I could see the white outer tail feathers as it flew. It
was noticeably smaller than the Mourning Doves perched with but did not appear
as tiny aa a Common Ground-Dove. Whether or not this is the same individual
seen
last week further north in Western Kentucky I do not know but that would be a
strong possibility as that really isn’t that far for a bird to fly. Who
knows?
If you were on the levee heading west on the north side of the community of
Cates, the levee curves back to the north, on your left there are some mobile
homes (these would be on the NW corner of the community). On right side of the
levee (if you’re heading west>north you will see several bulldozer brush
piles
surrounded by tall grass and vegetation. The bird was last seen sitting on a
brush pile with Mourning Doves.
Shorebirds at Jolly’s Landing were pretty much the same at what Michael Todd
had
here on Monday. Stilt Sandpipers, Short-billed Dowitchers, and Semi-palmated
Plovers were all still present.
Good birding,
Mark Greene

Subject: PUMA roost dissipatingFrom: Melinda Welton <weltonmj AT earthlink.net> Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2010 11:28:58 -0500 Last night about 20 people showed up for the roosting of the Purple Martins
at the Oldham Street Roost in East Nashville. Again the birds swarmed around
the ears of the Batman building, but by 7:30 the numbers had only slightly
grown. What birds were there put on a satisfying show for the spectators,
but I would estimate that about 80% of the martins had left for parts to our
south.
It will be interesting to see if the roost builds again, with remaining
northern birds starting their journey to Brazil.

Subject: Shorebird Movement - MemphisFrom: OLCOOT1 AT aol.com Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2010 08:01:23 EDT Aug. 22-23-24, 2010
Ensley / NTP
Shelby Co. TN
Another chapter in the unique migration of Wind Birds and Habitat around
Memphis.
Last Saturday, the "Pits" at Ensley were almost void of birds, little water
and north winds had swept the area almost clean except for a few
stragglers. Saturday night, finally rain and we had a ton of birds to glean
through
on Sunday but little variety. The immature Buff-breasted and up close
Upland made the day.
I ran down to spend some free time I had to glean through the birds
looking for a rarity that might be lurking and found the birds to have left on
the north winds being pushed by another front. At the North Treatment Plant,
I located a few new birds that had dropped in overnight. These new birds
were really new, all in crisp juvenile plumage. These were; 3 - First Of
Season immature Semipalmated Plovers, 2 - FOS immature Baird's and a nice long
billed Western with red racing stripes.
Another cold front is passing through now and should present a new set of

Subject: Black-throated Green Warbler, etc. - Davidson Co.From: Ed Schneider <ed.schneider AT hotmail.com> Date: Tue, 24 Aug 2010 18:50:23 -0500 I went out on our backporch this afternoon to get video of our reliable Eastern
Wood Pewees, and wound
up getting video of this immature Black-throated Green instead:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ed_schneider/4925020930/
This is an early date for our yard (in the three Falls we've counted), as was
the one immature Black-and-white on the
same oak tree. These two birds appeared one after another, then an immature
Northern Parula dropped in. Parula
breed in the yard, and are still on territory, so I'm unsure if this is a
transient bird or a local; I'm guessing the latter.
Other birds of note during my 20 minutes looking in the yard were:
Blue-winged Warbler - 1
Kentucky Warbler - male - still on territory in our woods
Red-eyed Vireo - 2
White-eyed Vireo - 1
Yellow-throated Vireo - 1

Subject: NW TN, 8/23/10From: "Michael & Rebecca Todd" <birder1 AT bellsouth.net> Date: Tue, 24 Aug 2010 13:38:11 -0500 8/23/2010
NW TN (Dyer, Lake, Obion Co)
I had to be in Memphis yesterday morning, so had planned to bird around there
some for the first time this fall. But, Jeff was able to get away and scouted
it out for me, and had practically no birds, so I headed north. I drove up and
got on the Great River Rd at the south end of Dyer Co. Habitat is practically
nonexistent in this area. The only water is in bar pits. I did find one pit
south of Hwy 104 with some exposed mud along the edges. Here were several
Killdeer, Least, Spotted, and a nice juv. Short-billed Dowitcher.
Looking out from Tiptonville Bar, with not a slip of sand visible in either
direction, produced only Least Terns and hordes of Swallows (mostly Bank, Tree,
and Rough-winged). Scanning Reelfoot also produced only gobs of Least Terns,
Great Egrets, and DC Cormorants.
Without doubt, the highlight of the day was Jolly's Landing, just outside of
Titponville in Lake Co. This area is perfect for shorebirds right now, with
about 1000 birds present, with 11 species. Most were Least of course, but lots
of young Semi Sandpipers (and a few adults). I was surprised to have a couple
of dozen Pectoral's, since Jeff has been getting very few in Memphis. All but
one were adults though. A few young Western, a handful of Spotted, Solitary,
Lesser Yellowlegs, Semi Plovers and two each of juv. Stilt Sandpiper and
Short-billed Dowitcher. I got some decent, long-range shots of the young
Dowitchers, which I really enjoy looking at.
After leaving here, I drove up the levee to see if I could find the Avocets
that have been around in Fulton Co, KY. Thanks to Nancy, I was able to find
them, and get some poor late afternoon looks at them in their distant wet spot.
All 4 were still there. I made a brief search for the Inca Dove in the same
general area, with no luck. Also went by the lake west of Woodland Mills that
Mark mentioned a few days ago. I've never been to that spot, and there were
still lots of shorebirds using the exposed areas. Had hoped for Baird's all
day, and especially here since Mark had them here, but no luck. Quite a few
Pectorals here as well though, along with Least, Semi Sands, Lesser Yellowlegs,
Spotted and Solitary.
It is a terrible season for shorebirds in this end of the state. Between the
Mississippi staying up much later than normal and eliminating the sandbar
habitat, the lack of rain, very few managed shorebird areas, these birds have
practically nowhere to use here right now. Hopefully something will give
shortly one way or the other, and also KY Lake should start coming down soon to
give the later season birds a chance.
I've posted a few photos of late, nothing exciting though. If interested, the
gallery is:

Subject: Architectural glass improvement to help save birdsFrom: collinsc1 AT aol.com Date: Tue, 24 Aug 2010 11:52:03 -0400 I thought the list members might find this story of interest. I've pasted the

>>UVcoating that makes transparent architectural glass less lethal to birds
getsRed Dot award
Edited By Peter Wray • August 23, 2010
We’ve all heard that “out of nowhere” whack on home or office windows
andlater found the carcass of some poor bird lying below it. It’s easy to
imaginethat this scenario gets played out thousands of times a day around the
world. But, until I ran across this story at Treehugger, I had no idea how big
of aproblem this is. According to German glassmaker Arnold Glas (Arnold
Glaswerke), these bird-on-windowcollisions happen about 250,000 times a day in
Europe,alone.
Arnold Glas’s solution is to treat glass panels with a special UV
reflectivecoating visible to birds (which apparently can see a broader UV
spectrum thanhumans) but is otherwise invisible to the public. The coating
creates aweb-like pattern of lines for the birds that look, at least to me,
like a formof netting. The company calls this line of glass products Ornilux.
The company claims that it had researchers from the Max Planck Institutefor
Ornithology to test and compare Ornilux glass toalternatives, such as colored
adhesive stripes and bird-silhouettes. Thecompany’s websites says that,
“During these experiments various glass types were testedon over 850 birds
from 19 different species. After capture, the wild birds weregiven time to
recover and were then released in a flight tunnel. The birdscould then fly
towards one of two glass panels mounted at the end of the tunnelwhich were
separated by a net. Of the two glass panels, one panel was made ofcommon
insulated glass as a control object and the other panel was used fortesting the
effectiveness of various glass types. The experimental results forOrnilux glass
clearly showed that 76 % of the birds tested (representing 82from 108 test
flights) avoided the newly developed Ornilux panel and flewtowards the
conventional glass panel.”
As it turns out, Orniluxisn’t exactly a new line of glass, but perhaps
described as newly recognized. Arnold Glas says it first used the glass in 2006
in amodernization of century-old swimming pool in the city of Plauen,in the
German Stateof Saxony.
But, some recent publicity has stirred new interest in the Ornilux. This summer,
a particular product in the line, Ornilux Mikado, received aprestigous Red Dot
designaward from Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany, a
centerthat has been lauding international product designs and design agencies
fornearly six decades.<<

Subject: Legendary bird tracker killed by freight train (Illinois)From: Greg Williams <k4hsm AT knology.net> Date: Tue, 24 Aug 2010 04:23:03 -0400
http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/08/legendary-bird-tracker-struck-by-freight-train.html
Wiry, bearded and spectacled, Arlo Raim roamed the country with three
dogs in his 1991 Saturn station wagon and held near legendary status
among bird trackers.
"He was one of, if not the best, bird tracker in the world," said Mike
Ward, coordinator of the critical trends assessment program at the
Illinois Natural History Survey and one of Raim's supervisors. "He
used radio telemetry to track animals as varied as peregrine falcons,
coyotes, turtles and northern cardinals."
That work may have gotten Raim killed. Authorities from the DuPage
County Sheriff's Office and the Canadian National Railway today
continued to investigate the death of Raim, who was struck by a train
Friday morning in a DuPage County forest preserve near Bartlett.
Raim had been in Pratt's Wayne Woods to monitor the effect of
increased train traffic on cardinals, Natural History Survey
spokeswoman Libby Johnston said Monday. A southbound Canadian National
Railway freight train struck Raim, 67, about 7:30 a.m., CN spokesman
Patrick Waldron said...

Subject: Screech Owls at Harpeth River GreenwayFrom: "fekel" <fekel AT evans.tsuniv.edu> Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 14:37:11 -0500 Harpeth River Greenway
Morton Mill Road

Bellevue, TN
Sunday 2010 Aug. 22
6:20-7:40am
Sunday morning I walked the Harpeth River Greenway, next to the Harpeth
River in Bellevue on the SW side of Davidson Co. In past years I've seen
several different types of shorebirds at the small lake next to the
river. This August however, there has been an excess of rain, making
for a high water level and resulting in a lack of mud for shorebirds.
The Harpeth is the river that caused the vast majority the flood
damage in the Bellevue area at the beginning of May. In fact about
the first 0.75 miles of the greenway walk was under water at that time.
On my Sunday walk there was extensive fog, making it a very gray
morning, but my spirits lifted when I heard one EASTERN SCREECH
OWL call as I walked past the 0.75 mile marker, and then perhaps 0.3-0.4
miles further along the walk, to my amazement I heard a second one
calling. The first one was calling from an area where I have heard
it on and off for the past 6 months but the second one was new.

Subject: Update on Nashville Purple Martin roostFrom: collinsc1 AT aol.com Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 10:11:49 -0400 August 22, 2010
Downtown Nashville
Davidson Co., TN
My wife and I went to observe the Purple Martin roost at I-24 and Oldham Street
in downtown Nashville on Friday, 8/20, and Sunday, 8/22. I won't pretend to be
able to estimate the number of birds, but there appeared to be more there last
night than on my previous viewings. Both nights we watched from the corner of
N. 2nd St. and Howerton Ave.
Sunday night was a nice evening with very few clouds and a nearly full moon. We
observed two large groups of Purple Martins gathering prior to them coming to
the roost. One group was circling around the cellular tower to the NW of the
roost, with numerous birds seeming to land on the tower itself. The other group
appeared to be 3X as large as the first one and they were circling around the
AT&T building to the SSW of the roost. We spotted two Cooper's Hawks in
attendance.
There was one small group that seemed hesitant to come down to the roost, but
everybody was in by 7:55 - 8:00 PM.

Subject: Blue JaysFrom: "likebird" <likebird AT bellsouth.net> Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 07:40:50 -0500 Birders,
I was feeding peanuts to my Blue Jays this morning and noticed all five had
lost their head feathers. They really remind me of minature vultures when this
happens each late August. Amazingly, their skin is black.

Subject: Rain = GOOD Birds -MemphisFrom: OLCOOT1 AT aol.com Date: Sun, 22 Aug 2010 21:28:03 EDT Aug. 22, 2010
Shelby Co. TN
I had a birder in from Connecticut today and we found 4 of the 5 target
birds she wanted but just did not have time to get to the habitat for number
5. A rewarding day with lots of Mississippi Kites plus high flying,
migrating Cooper's, Broad-winged, Red-shouldered and Red-tails.
Finally, a little rain over night put a few birds on the ground today.
Diversity still way down but numbers went sky high overnight. A super stunning,
Red-shouldered Hawk at Shelby Farms, up close and personal views of an
immature Upland Sandpiper in bright, sharp dress at Ensley, and another
immature Buff-breasted also found at Ensley were nice rewards on a warm day.
Only
13 species of Wind Birds but good looks at all.
Least, Black, Foster's and Caspian Terns on the Mississippi River and a few
woodland birds moving even in the heat. Cattle, Little Blue, Snowy and
Great Egrets along with a bunch of immature Great Blues rounded out a mundane
selection of waders.

Subject: Norris Dam Songbird Trail - Bald EagleFrom: Carole Gobert <cpgobert AT hotmail.com> Date: Sun, 22 Aug 2010 18:35:04 -0400 I had a nice surprise while birding the Songbird Trail at Norris Dam State Park
in Anderson County, TN today. An adult Bald Eagle lazily circling the river.
First one I've seen from the Songbird Trail (and I go there often); we did have
two at the dam on a KTOS trip a couple years ago.
The river banks were full of jewel weed (I think... not good with flowers),
yellow flowers and butterflies. Just two hummingbirds seen in the jewel weed.

Williamson County
While riding around south of Franklin I noticed 14 Great Egrets in a small,
shallow lake. In the mix was an immature Little Blue Heron. The last time I
saw this many Great Egrets in one place was in Florida. The small lake /
large pond is on Hwy 246 about two miles south of Southall Rd.

Subject: No swallow-tailed Kite today (8/21/2010); Sequatchie CoFrom: "Michael & Rebecca Todd" <birder1 AT bellsouth.net> Date: Sat, 21 Aug 2010 20:54:14 -0500 8/21/2010
Sequatchie Co (vicinity of Cookie Jar Restaurant)
Apologize for previous post, not sure what happened. It came in fine back to me
both on my phone and computer. But, it was scrambled on birdingonthe.net and in
other people's email.
Anyway, several of us searched from before 10 AM until about 4 PM, for the
Swallow-tailed that was seen as recently as yesterday near the Cookie Jar
Restaurant. We had good conditions with a lot of aerial activity earlier in the
day, before a good rain came thru in the afternoon. We spent most of our time
in the vicinity of where it has been seen the most recently, but worked this
whole area off and on, with a wide view of the whole area possible from the
elevated Cookie Jar parking lot. We are on the very tail end of their stay
before leaving NA for the winter, so this bird probably wouldn't be around much
longer anyway. Hopefully it is still present, but I think likely it has started
south. Nice week and a half stay anyway.
Good Birding!!
