Saturday, October 11 - Ellington Agricultural Center, Davidson Co.

We'll bird Ellington's woods, fields and streams for fall migrants and any
early winter residents. Birding will be done from paved, mulched and grassy
trails, including some hills. This trip will last just the morning. Meet at
the gravel lot (iris garden parking lot) immediately to the right of the
Hogan Rd. entrance at 7:00 A.M. From I-65, south of downtown, take the Harding

Pl. exit, east bound. Just past the railroad overpass, turn right at the stop

light beyond the freeway (Trousdale). Follow Trousdale 1 mile. Turn left
onto Hogan Rd.. Follow Hogan to a "T" intersection with Marchant Rd. Continue

straight into Ellington Agricultural Center, make an immediate right. The
entrance to the parking lot is on the right, before you start up the hill.

Years ago some students and I got a brief view of a Henslow's near Indian
Creek (Hardin Co.). Noticing that it flew along the edge of the woods next
to a pasture, we went and got mist nets, put one up perpendicular to the
edge, half in and half out of the woods, chased the Henslow's along the
edge, and soon caught and banded it,- first time I ever hunted an individual
bird.

I was away from home for several days this last week and figured I had seen the
last of the Hummers. But I did see one yesterday, Wednesday and one this
morning at the feeder. They appeared to be either females or immature males.
About as late in the season I have seen them here.

Subject: Sabine's Gull - Mississippi River - Memphis
From: OLCOOT1 AT aol.com
Date: Wed, 8 Oct 2008 21:37:34 EDT
Oct. 8, 2008
Mississippi River
Shelby Co. TN

Twenty years ago, on Oct. 1, 1988, I saw my first Sabine's Gull in TN, an
immature floating down the river and then flying north and out of sight. Today,

at 8 AM an adult flew out of the mist and continued down river and as every
time before the rush of seeing this beautiful mostly pelagic species inland
was a breath taking experience. The Mississippi is the place to be, in
September and October, to see this species but it takes patience.

The mist and rain gave up few gulls today but they dribbled through for
about an hour. Only once was there more than one in view at one time and then
only 2 Ring-bills. A total of 3 Herring and 5 Ring-bills were seen but the
thought of the Sabine's has been the bird keeping me coming back. This is the
7th

I've seen on the river and the 3rd here at Memphis. Seek and ye shall
find..............The Peregrine was hunting again today in the rain.
Good Birding !!!

Spent an hour and a half in the rain in the morning and located an old
friend sitting on a stump on Dacus Bar. One of the Peregrines that spend a lot
of

time hunting the bar is back on duty. It tried to take an unlucky Wood Duck
that happened by but tied of trying to snatch it from the water and went back
to one of its favorite perches to preen. I got a couple of photos. The only
other movement was a couple of Ring-billed Gulls and a first year LAUGHING
GULL that came in and rested on the upper Loosahatchie Bar and then moved
south.

While visiting Chattanooga this weekend for the Three Sisters Music
Festival, we saw a Marsh Wren in a row of landscaping bushes near Ross
Landing Park. The bird was observed around 6:30 PM on 04 October 2008. As
we walked back to the festival, a blur moved in the bushes next to us. We
pished, and the bird popped up and showed itself to be a Marsh Wren. It
provided very abiding looks, coming into view at eye level only about 5 feet
away; the bird seemed very tired.
My apologies for the late post.

Good birding,

The migrant season is in full swing here, with warblers, thrushes and more.
There are still at least a pair of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, and by way of
contrast, turkeys. Usually there are a flock of seven smaler males, a solitary
huge male and a single female all showing up at different times. Today six
females appeared while the big male was around. He responded by displaying, but
really made a fool of himself! He is moulting, and looking quite patchy, and
his tail is very snaggle-toothed with quite a few really short tail feathers.
The effect is quite demeaning, and he is suitably ignored by the girls. Ralph
Brinkhurst, Lebanon, Wilson Co.

More pre-work highlights from the backyard this morning (Black Oak
Ridge, west Knox Co, Tues, 7 Oct 2008).

I've had good luck this year with Empids both in finding them and
with them being vocal to allow ID. This morning I had a cooperative
LEAST FLYCATCHER in the yard that was giving its call note and also
giving good looks at the prominent, complete eyering and short
primary projection.

38 species

Ruby-throated Hummingbird, 2+

E Wood-Pewee, 2
LEAST FLYCATCHER, 1, heard calling and seen well
E Phoebe, 1 eating pokeberries

White-eyed Vireo, 1
BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 1, first of season

Gray-cheeked Thrush, at least 2
Wood Thrush, 1

Tennessee Warbler, 4+
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, 1 first of season in the yard
Nashville Warbler, 1
Chestnut-sided Warbler, 1, with chestnut-sides
Magnolia Warbler, 4+ including the odd-plumaged bird from yesterday
Black-throated Green Warbler, 2
Ovenbird, 2

First off you can try to figure out where these 13 Black-bellied Whistling
Ducks came from that showed up Saturday afternoon at Ensley Bottoms. Try:

Saturday, 2 Franklin's Gulls rested far out on the Mississippi River and
also the Forster's Terns were perched up in the tree tops for a pretty unusual

photo at Mud Lake. Sunday, I worked ragweed patches all afternoon around Shelby

Co, and found 13 species of warblers including a female Golden-wing and a
feisty House Wren.

My mother and I birded around the north end of Songbird/Edge Path Trail below
Norris Dam (Anderson Co.)sunday from 11am-2pm. We managed to see our first ever
Red-Headed Woodpecker. After my first sighting I wasn't sure, and being
preoccupied with warblers I thought maybe it was a juvenile of another species
of woodpecker. After 2 more sightings in the area I pulled out the field guide
to check juv. Red-Headed and that was it. We've been wanting to see one for a
while and still want to see an adult. I got a couple of first-of-season birds
with Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker and Yellow-Rumped Warbler as well.

Partial list:

American Redstart - 2 (m,f)
Black-and-White Warbler - 1 (m)
Chestnut-Sided Warbler - 2
Common Yellowthroat - 2 (m,f)
Magnolia Warbler - several
Palm Warbler - 6+
Pine Warbler - 1
Yellow-Rumped Warbler - 2-3

Scarlet Tanager - 1-2
Eastern Wood Pewee - 2-3
Gray Catbird - 1
Brown Thrasher - 3+
Cedar Waxwing - 3+
Chipping Sparrow - 1

   Woodpeckers:
Red-Headed W.P. - 1 (juv.)
Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker - 1 (f)
Red-Bellied W.P.
Downy W.P.
N. Flicker - 1 (m)

35 total species with common/permanent birds included

NTOS members had our Fall bird count on October 4 and had 121 species, plus
one Mute Swan of unknown origin in Cheatham County. A Mute Swan was present
in the same area on our 2007 Spring and Fall counts, but is not normally seen
there. Some of the highlights were 3 Horned Grebes at Old Hickory Lake, 1
Northern Shoveler at Shelby Bottoms, 2 Osprey, 1 Northern Harrier and 1
Peregrine Falcon in Cheatham Co., 1 Black-billed Cuckoo at Warner Park, 14
Great

Horned Owls (11 in Cheatham Co.), all the woodpeckers, 1 Acadian Flycatcher at

Harpeth East, 1 Brown Creeper, 1 Winter Wren at Beaman Park, all the
thrushes, 18 warbler species, and 1 Blue Grosbeak at Bells Bend. Shorebird
habitat

was dismal, so we only had 5 shorebird species. Thank you to all 32
participants.

month ago...

I have seven 48 ounce feeders that are emptied every two to three days
during July and August..

Subject: Southern Festival of Books
From: EGLEAVES AT aol.com
Date: Mon, 6 Oct 2008 11:17:19 EDT
To the Tennessee Birding and Library Communities:

This coming weekend, October 10-12, the Southern Festival of Books (SFB)
returns to Nashville (for good, I understand). The Arts and Entertainment
section of yesterday's (Nashville) Tennessean described it well:

"Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Southern Festival of Books brings
more than 250 authors from all over the United States to Nashville's War
Memorial Plaza this week. From prize-winning journalists and historians to
renowned

novelists and writers of young adult fiction, Humanities Tennessee's annual
Celebration of the Word has something for everyone, including plenty of
panels and readings featuring local and regional authors."

Of special interest to birders will be Richard Modlin discussing his book
Chasing Wings: Birding Exploits and Encounters, which will take place at
3:00-4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, in the Capitol Library.

But don't stop there; the SFB offers a staggering array of sessions on many
subjects, beginning at noon on Friday and continuing through Sunday
afternoon. And it's all free--although contributions are warmly welcomed.

For a full list of offerings, check out the following website:

Hope to see you there!

Subject: Black-throated Blue, etc. - Knox
From: kde AT utk.edu
Date: Mon, 6 Oct 2008 10:45:48 -0400 (EDT)
After a weekend of Piping Plovers, Sandwich Terns, and the like
in Wilmington, NC, I returned to Knoxville and had a few good
birds in the backyard (west Knox Co) before work Monday morning
(6 Oct 2008). 35 species with only 4 warbler species but 6
woodpeckers missing only Red-headed. Still lots of Black Gum
fruit left and lots of activity there... much to the frustration
of the local Mockingbirds.

Had an interesting Magnolia Warbler which was mostly in breeding-
type plumage. Full black mask with white eyebrow, black streaking
on the mantle, heavy streaking on the underparts but mostly on
the flanks and not the center of the breast (so not forming a
full 'necklace'). Perhaps an older female retaining more alternate-
type patterns in her basic plumage? I don't recall ever seeing
this plumage in fall before and Dunn and Garrett doesn't show it.

highlights:

YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 1 immature, first of season, late
RT Hummingbird, 2
E Wood-Pewee, 1-2
Swainson's Thrush, 1
Gray-cheeked Thrush, 3, outnumbered Swainson's
Tennessee Warbler, 2
Magnolia Warbler, 4, including the odd bird
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 1 female/imm type, first of year
OVENBIRD, 2, still hanging around
Summer Tanager, 1
Scarlet Tanager, 1
Indigo Bunting, 1-2

PS, if you go to NC, don't expect to find gasoline between
Winston-Salem and the TN state line.

Subject: Hacked South Holston eagle recovered after 14 years.
From: "Wallace Coffey" <jwcoffey AT tricon.net>

Content-Type: text/plain;

South Holston hacked Bald Eagle recovered after 14 years in wild.

An injured adult Bald Eagle was taken to the College of Veterinary =
Medicine at
The University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Saturday (Oct. 4). It had been =
turned
over to the American Eagle Foundation of Pigeon Forge, by officials of
the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. It had a very badly damaged =
wing.

The bird wore a US Fish & Wildlife Service bird band. It was a bird =
hacked
at South Holston Lake on 29 July 1994 as part of a multi-year project =
which
was funded with $17,700 raised by Bristol Bird Club members and hundreds =
of
others in a cooperative project with the Bristol Herald Courier. And =
with matching
donations from the federal government, the total came to $23,000.

Michael P. Jones, D.V.M., Associate Professor of Avian & Zoological =
Medicine
with UT Veterinary Medicine looked at the bird today. The entire =
humerous bone=20
was exposed and there were other problems. Dr. Jones recommended the =
eagle=20
be euthanized, since he would have had to amputate the entire wing which =
is no
longer allowed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

At this hour, we do not know where the injured bird was discovered or =
who recovered
it from the wild.

This eagle, taken to the UT Veterinary school today, was sponsored by =
BBC member
Bob Quillen and seven of his fellow workers from the Right of Way =
section of
the Virginia Department of Transportation's Bristol District Office =
which oversees
12 Southwest Virginia counties.

Quillen, who was a Right of Way Agent, coordinated raising contributions =
of $510
from his fellow workers. The Bristol District Office had more than 315 =
other
employees who donated to help adopt a second eagle.

"That absolutely made my day," said Quillen when reached by telephone at =
his
home Saturday evening. "It is really wonderful to know what happened to =
our
bird." He had told the VDOT newspaper when they donated the money in =
June
1991 that "Eagles recognize no boundaries, and neither do VDOT employees
when it comes to preserving our endangered species."

Quillen's group named their bird "Zeus" from Greek mythology. Zeus was =
the king
of the gods, the ruler of the god of the sky and thunder. His symbols =
are
the thunderbolt, eagle, bull and oak.

Eaglet Zeus was taken from a wild nest in Wisconsin at the age of 8.2 =
weeks
and flown out of the region by Northwest Airlines as a donation to the =
project.
It was kept in a hacking tower on a ridge above South Holston Lake from =
17 June
to 29 July of 1994. It was 14.3 weeks of age when released, weighed 11.3
pounds, and stayed at the lake until it departed the area after having =
been last
seen 8 August 1994.

This eagle, with band number 629-39613, wore a green patagial marker =

The South Holston hacking project was a cooperative effort of the U.S. =
Forest Service,=20
Tennessee Tech University and TWRA. . =20

In the long run 29 birds were hacked over a three year period from the =
huge hacking
towers at South Holston. Eaglets were brought from Alaska and Wisconsin =

during the period 1991-1994.

Quillen is now retired from VDOT. A public relations officer and =
cameraman from
VDOT in Richmond came to South Holston Lake to interview Quillen and =
another=20
local employee in 1991. The story with photo appeared on the front page =
of VDOT's=20
statewide employee newspaper. No one was concerned that this was a =
Tennessee
project and would be conducted in Tennessee. The Bald Eagle is our =
national
symbol.

Eagles soar throughout the region. We now have eagles nesting in =
Kingsport and=20
on the Clinch River in Hancock County. They are showing up in rural =
areas of=20
Southwest Virginia where they have never before been seen by birders.

Eagles have been observed every month of the year at South Holston.

We do not know how many eaglets, grandeaglets or great grandeaglets have =
been
among the descendants of Zeus, let alone others hacked at South Holston. =

Let's go birding......

The Mississippi River has dropped some more but nothing after an hours watch
this AM, so I left for the "Pits".
Lots of Least Sandpipers to say the least, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, the
Sanderling is still around, 5 Western Sandpipers (2 basic pl, 2 molting and 1
in

juvenile plumage just replacing a couple of mantle feathers) plus a dozen
Pectoral Sandpipers. My first western calurus Red-tail for the season seen
sitting

in a dead snag and a migrating Cooper's plus an Osprey were the raptor total,
except for 3 resident Kestrel. Lots of Nashville and Tennessee Warblers
working the ragweed and boxelders

Another Osprey and 2 Ruddy Ducks at Robco; at Mud Lake, no Spoonbills but 62
Forster's Terns, 4 Greater Yellowlegs, 3 Lesser, plus Least and Pectoral
Sandpipers.

Back to the Mississippi River afternoon to find 2 FRANKLIN'S GULLS resting
in an eddy behind a dike off Loosahatchie Bar. I have a couple of distant
photos. It's time for them to move so heads up.

The surprise of the day back at Ensley at 5 PM, 13 - BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING
DUCKS, 1 adult-11 young, I'm still shaking my head as to where these birds
came from...........Such is birding!!!!

Subject: Ensley - BB Whistling Duck Mystery?
From: OLCOOT1 AT aol.com
Date: Sat, 4 Oct 2008 22:33:20 EDT
Oct. 4, 2008
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

This morning there was nothing on TVA Lake but this afternoon it held a
mystery. Sixteen Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were a one afternoon treat this

spring, then 2 adults showed up a month later for a visit and then showed up
again a month after that and the next month we found about 10 young hatchlings.

We watched these ducklings dwindle to 7, then 6 and finally 5. These five
went on to reach flying stage and the family used McKellar lake and TVA Lake
for a while until they were joined by another adult. This group of 8 was seen
for a few days and finally just a single adult was seen last Sunday.

This afternoon, I drove up and immediately saw an adult and a few young, at
first I counted 4 young but then found 6 more pile up sleeping and then
another 2 walked out from behind the geese...............An ADULT with TWELVE
FLEDGED YOUNG??

Evidently another nesting somewhere but where did they come from, were they
hatched around Ensley? Where have they been hiding for the last 2 months? If
not hatched here, how did they happen to pick TVA Lake to show up and stand in

the exact same spot the other Whistlings had been using?

Beats me, They flew out of TVA and back to McKellar Lake at 7
PM..............Photos later.
Good Birding !!!

Subject: Kingston Steam Plant field trip results
From: "Ron and Dollyann" <aves7000 AT bellsouth.net>
Date: Sat, 4 Oct 2008 20:44:08 -0400
Tn-birders,
This morning 11 people attended the Knoxville chapter TOS field trip to the
Kingston Steam Plant in Roane Co. We arrived in front of the plant to look for
the Brown-headed Nuthatches that have been present for several years. A long
row of pine trees near the road died a few years back due to the Southern Pine
Bark Beetle infestation, so the fate of these nuthatches was in doubt. There
are still 3-4 patches of pines near the area and the birds seem to be doing
fine with the remaining trees, as we found about 6 of them. We also had a nice
wave of birds and several warblers along the entry road across from the pines.
Our focus then shifted to the rear of the plant, where we worked the tall weeds
and then the trees along the back embayment of the plant, hoping for an odd
sparrow or two. We didn't find any odd sparrows but enjoyed looking at some
nice butterflies and dragonflies.

Here is the list of species found today. We birded from about 0815 to 1230
before retiring to a local restaurant for some calories and liquids. I only
included the totals for some of the species. We also ran into Ed Manous in the
back and he had a Merlin over the soccer fields early in the morning while we
were in the front of the plant.

Subject: Still an adult male Ruby-thoated H'bird at my feeder
From: "Anna Varney" <livingglassart AT gmail.com>
Date: Sat, 4 Oct 2008 16:06:43 -0500
I can't recall such a late date for an adult male remaining at my feeder. I
saw him yesterday and again today, but don't think his health is all that
great--just a gut feeling. In the morning when he feeds its appearant that
this breathing and heart rate are evalated-like he is struggling.
Nonetheless, there is still a female/juvenile still coming to the back
feeder and this bird appears to be in good condition, feeds and flies to the
nearest clear branch to perch-then it comes in to feed again.

About 11AM today I had an Osprey fly over at Hidden Lake, Harpeth River
State Park, Davidson County.
And at about 12 noon I had one at Gossett Tract, Harpeth River State Park,
Cheatham Co. I'd say these are all separate birds, they are on the move.

Subject: Henslow's Sparrow in Gibson County

NW Gibson County

This afternoon while working near the Cool Springs community in NW Gibson
County I flushed a Henslow's Sparrow from a grassy field on Switzer Road. It
flew a short distance and I relocated it and watched it for a couple of minutes
before it disappeared back into the grass. This is the first Henslow's Sparrow
that I've had in Gibson County and I know of no other county records for it.

Good birding,

Subject: Philly, Winter Wren, etc. - Knox
From: kde AT utk.edu
Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2008 10:43:16 -0400 (EDT)
Another good morning in the backyard before work. Heard a song
which, being fall, was so out of place it took me a minute to
register it as Black-and-white Warbler. Eventually tracked him
down just to be sure I wasn't loosing it. Guess he thought is
was such a nice day that chip notes wouldn't do and it deserved
a full song.

There was a big movement of thrushes overnight 1-2 October with
good numbers of Gray-cheeked and many Swainson's calling overhead.
A few last night as well but much lower numbers. Both continue
to occur in the yard eating Black Gum fruit along with Veery and
thrashers, tanagers, woodpeckers, House Finches, Cardinals, etc.

highlights:
Backyard, Black Oak Ridge, west Knox Co
Fri, 3 Oct 2008

RT Hummingbird, 3+ still going strong
E Wood-Pewee, 1

PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 1 in the Black Gums

WINTER WREN, 1, ultra rare in the yard, haven't checked records yet
to confirm but I think this is only either the 2nd or 3rd record,
this guy was visiting below the feeder with the Ovenbird before
sunrise

E Bluebird, Am Robin
Veery, 1 heard only back in the woods
Gray-cheeked Thrush, 1 seen, more heard overhead last few nights
Swainson's, at least 1 in yard, more overhead nocturnal migrants

Tennessee Warbler, 1
Chestnut-sided, 1 w/ chestnut sides
Magnolia, 3+
Black-throated Green, 2
Black-and-white, 1 SINGING male
Ovenbird, at least 1 still hanging around under the feeder
(Hooded Warbler, 1 on 2 October)

(Scarlet Tanager, 1 on 2 Oct in the Black Gums)

I had my first of season Brown Creeper in my yard this afternoon in south
Nashville. It was feeding along the trunk of a huge cherry tree. Also had a
male ruby-throated hummingbird, pewee, Nashville warbler, magnolia,
yellow-rumped, and displaying flickers. At Radnor Lake this morning, there was
a robin

chasing a pileated woodpecker back and forth through the forest at great
speed, a first for me.

Compared to yesterday's visit, there seemed to be much more

the west parking lot to Long Bridge and back, mostly along
the Lake Trail. Instead of the more than 500 CO
