Subject: (Metro Birding Briefs) RI Pelagic Trip spots still available!
From: Mardi Dickinson <mardi1 AT optonline.net>
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2010 17:13:46 -0400
Dear birders et all,

I just heard that the RI Pelagic trip still has available room. If you
are interested
contact Carlos Pedro asap, Here is the info below.

Cheers,
Mardi Dickinson
Norwalk, CT
mardi1 AT optonline.net

I am passing this along from Carlos Pedro
If you are interested in participating please e-mail me at dcpedro AT
cox.net as soon as possible.
The trip has been re- scheduled to depart on Thursday, September 9th
at 9 PM and return at 9 PM
on September 10th.

We will depart from the Galilee Dock in Narragansett aboard the 'Lady
Frances'.
This boat is the newest and fastest boat of the Frances Fleet.
There are bunks onboard for 45 passengers but this trip will be
limited to
38.The idea would be to sleep on the way and wake up at dawn on the
shelf edge
90 miles out , bird until 3 PM and return to port. There is a full
Galley and
food and drink can be bought or you can bring your own.
The cost of the trip if we can get 38 birders will be $135.

This trip could present a great opportunity to possibly see some of
the rarer
visitors to RI waters such as Audobon's Shearwater, Bridled and Arctic
Tern,
South Polar Skua, Jaegers, White-faced and Leech's Storm-petrels and
possibly a
first RI record Band-rumped Storm-petrel. Band-rumps have been
regularly seen
over the past few years on Mass. trips to the canyons south of
Nantucket.
The Brookline Bird club trip to the Canyons just east of Block Canyon
had
a tremendous trip this past weekend (20+ White-faced Storm-Petrels,
Great Skua,
Band-rumped Storm-Petrel and Long-tailed Jaeger) and we're hoping to
get some
good birds.

This just came on the CT List serve and wanted to get this out for
others.

From Scott K - 8/7 9:08am: Finally got solid word that yes the WT
Kite has been perched in a dead tree at Short Beach for a bit now.
Check it out there but be ready to pay to get in. Do not know the
exact spot - find the masses of birders.
Just in - 9:27 am It heard me email the list - took off towards the
airport and Stratford Great Meadows IBA. Will update when relocated.

Original Location that bird returns to.

UPDATE...just rec'd AT Sunday, August 01, 2010 3:15 PM

We have a report that the White-tailed Kite was seen near Dunkin Donuts and
the commercial complex next to Frash Pond, still in Stratford not far away.
We surmised it could be in the Stratford Great Meadows IBA and it seems that
it has moved there to hunt. That is likely your best bet at the moment. I
and others will remain and watch at Stratford Point.

Hi all,

The American White Pelican is still being seen at the north end of the East
Pond just south of the island. Water levels are getting better but still
coming up to mid calf. I don't have to tell you, but boots are highly
advised. This report comes from Joe Borker.

Hi all,

In addition to the 3 American Avocets there is now a White Pelican sitting
in the water by the Fisherman's parking lot, That's the lot we park in when
going to the north end of the East Pond. The bird was found by the Jones
Beach Boys (Sam Jannazzo, Sy Schiff and Joe Giunta) JBWR stands for Jamaica

Pat Lindsay and Shai Mitra have found a Hudsonian Godwit at Cupsogue.
Originally feeding on a sandbar ¼ mile west of the Cupsogue flats it
eventually moved onto the flats as the tide came in. A good place to look
for it if not here would be Pike’s Beach. Good luck if you go.

George Dadone, Arie Gilbert, Jean Loscalzo, Eric Miller, Ian Resnick, and Lou
Widerka.

The Queens County Bird Club had a great trip to WPR, the weather heldup with
just a few brief showers, and in addition to the expectedbreeding birds,
butterflies & dragonflies, the unquestionablehighlight of the day was a
MISSISSIPPI KITE that flew over us at 5:05pmon Michigan Road. Since there were
still a few hours of daylight, wetried to phone several people, but
unfortunately, we were in a "deadzone" and no one could get a cell signal. The
bird arrived from theeast (CT) and flew over us to the west. All in the group
were able toget good looks and other possibilities were ruled out.

Hi all,

I'm sure most of you know there was a Fox Sparrow in Central Park today.
What makes it so interesting is it was one of the western race birds that
we're still working out. The bird was located on the eastern slope of
Strawberry Field. Here is an image of the bird

Hi all

Both Harry Mass and I saw the White-faced Ibis at about 12:30 this afternoon
in the south marsh at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. There were 30+ birds near
the Osprey platform to look through. Most of the time the birds were out at
the far edge of the marsh which made viewing quite difficult. After about an
hour I located the bird but wasn't able to keep on in for very long. The
grasses are quite tall and the birds get lost from view.

This is part of the "For the Birds" series, and I thought it would be good
to invite you to the event. For those of you unfamiliar- The Ivory-Billed
Woodpecker has been an ongoing controversy since it's strange 'rediscovery'
a few years ago: Is this in fact the historic reappearance of a long lost
species, or is this conservationist cause-célèbre merely a red herring?
Hope to see you there! ! !

Hi al,

Bob Adamo just called to let everybody know that the Upland Sandpiper
reported yesterday by Shai Mitra on NYSBirds is being seen again. It's on
the south side of the road between fields 4 & 5 at Rob't Moses SP. I'm
adding Upland Sandpiper to the master list of reportable birds to "Metro"
since they've become much harder to find. Good luck if you go.

were able to view the birds from the car.

The Lapland Longspur was present in a flock of Horned Larks and Snow Buntings
today at about 3pm at the previously mentioned coordinates at Floyd Bennett
Field. However, after photographing them for about 20 minutes, a park police
cruiser pulled up to us and an officer politely informed us that the area was
closed. The orange barriers had been pushed aside for snow removal but the
runway is off-limits. I'm not sure if that means pedestrians as well as cars.

I went and got mom who was really thrilled. ALso saw Tundra being
harassed by Mute Swan who seemingly left another pond for just that
purpose. I also zoomed in on some of the Tundra swan shots to get a
better look at his head...Cause honestly, I can't really tell the dif
between the trumpeters in the book & this bird. I know it's subtle
and I know my shots aren't the greatest.

Subject: (Metro Birding Briefs) Reducing aircraft-wildlife strikes at airports
From: Matt Kennedy <kennedym2009 AT yahoo.com>
Date: Thu, 28 Jan 2010 20:12:28 -0800 (PST)
Dear fellow birding enthusiasts,
As a lifelong birder and professional aviator for over 16 years, I am
conducting a nation-wide study on the level of community support for the
mitigation measures used at airports to reduce the wildlife strike hazard to
commercial aircraft.  Getting input from different regions of the country is
necessary to gauge whether there are regional differences due to varying bird
populations or possible high profile incidents involving wildlife strikes on
aircraft.

Responses are submitted electronically to a database that does not
identify users, so your answers will be completely confidential.  Findings
will be released only as analyzed data or summaries in which no individual’s
answers can be identified.  Please take a few moments to share your opinions
and experiences.  I appreciate you taking time from your busy schedule to
contribute toward this important research about community views on wildlife
mitigation measures at airports.

The survey can be accessed at:   https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XTVS225

If you would like a summary of my findings, please send me your e-mail address
at kennedym2009 AT yahoo.com.  Once the study is complete, I will e-mail the
summary to you.

Hi Lloyd,
This may be of local interest..........there was an adult G. White-fronted
Goose today at the south meadow at Planting Fields Arboretum, Oyster Bay,

This site is only about a straight line mile from the Oyster Bay Mill Pond.
Someone had found one of these there a short time ago, and the Canadas all flew

Lloyd, your report in Metro Birding seems to be the last update. I had the
bird today (01/18/10) at 1:10 pm on the west sside of the pedestrian
walkway. Ten minutes later a dog walker scared all the gulls and they did
not return while I was there (till 1:30). Could you post this information

bird is still present. I will post a short note to the NJ list tomorrow.
