Birders,
At around 4:30 this afternoon, I checked the tern flock that Jay
Gilliam mentioned in an earlier post. The flock consisted of 218
Caspian Terns, 2 Common Terns, and just 4 Forster's Terns.

Good birding,
John Bissell

This evening (9-1-10) Jim Forde and I found 14 species of shorebirds at Hawkeye
Wildlife Area in Johnson County. All except the Spotted Sandpipers were seen
from Sand Point. The juvenile Red Knot was directly north of Sand Point on a
sandbar. Peeps were in the muck to the west at the base of Sand Point.

Shorebird highlights:
2 American Avocets
1 Black-bellied Plover
1 Red Knot
1 Red-necked Phalarope

Pelican numbers are increasing. I'm too lazy to count them but they number over
a thousand, and I tend to guestimate on the low side.

Approximately 50 Caspian Terns were present.

We saw 1 Common Nighthawk pass over. Also 1 Peregrine Falcon.

Subject: lower Saylorville today/tonight
From: Danny Akers <birdmandan1231 AT hotmail.com>
Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2010 20:56:05 -0500
Hi All,

I first walked the Neal Smith Trail south of Sycamore Access this afternoon
over my lunch hour. Mosquitos were out, conditions were muggy, but 12 species
of warblers more than made up for it:

1 Golden-winged
1 Tennessee
1 Chestnut-sided
2 Magnolia
10 Black-and-white
2 American Redstart
4 Ovenbird
7 Northern Waterthrush (some of the best views I've ever had of this species!)
2 Mourning Warbler (including spectacular looks at an adult male!)
1 Common Yellowthroat
1 Wilson's
1 Canada

Also 4 Eastern Wood-Pewees, 6 Red-eyed Vireos, and 3 Swainson's Thrushes.

This evening, I had intended to do a brief loop around the lower end of
Saylorville after class, but a *few* migrating Common Nighthawks had other
plans for me. I wound up sitting at the eastern overlook of the Dam from
615-645 PM:

952 (!!!) COMMON NIGHTHAWKS (surpassed 650 birds before 630 PM!)
86 Caspian Terns

I surely wonder how many birds had been moving before I arrived and I'm certain
I missed countless birds! Nighthawks were moving south along both east and west
sides of the reservoir, as well as directly overhead (often no more than 30
feet overhead). About 1/3 of the Caspian Terns also moved south over the Dam,
but the majority were over the reservoir closer to Lakeview.

After the amazing spectacle at the dam, I ventured up towards Cherry Glen and
surveyed the Gulls and Terns loafing on what is now visible of the lower
parking lot:

263 (!) Caspian Terns
4 Forster's Terns

Along the drive back to Ankeny from Cherry Glen, several dozen Common
Nighthawks were hunting over the streets and homes in town.... easily another
70-80 birds.

What a night!

At around 5:15pm tonight I saw 2 flocks of common nighthawks from the
Coralville bike trail between Oakdale BLVD and Forevergreen Rd. The first flock
had 31 birds and was flying Northwest. The second flock had 82 birds and was
flying Southwest.

Hi all,
Danny Akers just called to say there was a massive migration of
nighthawks going over the east end of the dam at Saylorville Lake
right now. He said approx. 700 had already gone over with waves still
coming in.

I just made a quick stop at Robbins Lake and found a female
Hooded Warbler along the river, upstream from the boat ramp.
I relocated it again so it should be findable tonight. Water pump #5
(that side of road)) was the exact location. Seeing it low with its tail
fanned was a treat.

I just put a post on our blog about a begging juvenile American Dipper we
saw at the Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau, Alaska. The next day seven
photographers and three crew started a 9 day trip on a 50 foot boat, the
Delphinus, winding our way from Juneau to Wrangell, visited two bear
preserves and photographing in the wonderful Tongass forest. Not many birds
besides several gull species enjoying the salmon and salmon eggs. The
glaucous gulls were the most interesting. Also saw huge flocks of scoters
near icebergs. Did see two merganser families; one with a dozen youngsters.
Of course they were in the shade along salmon creeks.

Early this morning a large wave of migrants went through the park, by 9:30
it was quiet. Here is what I counted and I missed many:

Several Wood Pewees, Least and Great Crested Flycatchers; all vireo species
with at least 35 Red-eyed, 3 Swainson's Thrush, Catbirds, Grosbeaks and ten
warbler species including a Blue-winged, four Golden-winged, four Canada,
three Wilson's, two Magnolias and Ovenbirds. Most numerous were
Chestnut-sided (22) and Redstart(male and female/immature).

The immature Barred Owl was trying to put its "who cook's" together.

We had had only about an inch of rain in August so last night's 3/4 inch
was welcome. The mosquitoes haven't been too bad.

I decided to brave the mosquitoes this morning based on a conversation
with Tom Stone Sr. last night. Tom indicated he had seen 15 species of
warblers on Sunday. While my excursion was not quite that successful, I
did find 9 species including Tennessee, Black and White, Magnolia,
American redstart, Golden-winged, Nashville, Wilson's, Common yellowthroat
and Ovenbird. Also plenty of piercing insects.

Birders,
My youngest boy woke me up at 5:15 am this morning, and while giving him
some breakfast, I opened my deck door, and listened for migrants
briefly. While I dont have any specifics, there were many thrushes
migrating overhead with the light north breeze and overcast cloud layer.
Orioles were heard as well. I think favored warbler areas may be
worthwhile to check out today.

Good birding,

Subject: Last Chance to Make History for Our Natural Resources "Habitat"

You still have the opportunity to express your thoughts on the eight
authorized purposes of the Mo River and how the MRAPS process should
proceed. It's critically important that the COE hear from you. This is
the first opportunity to affect change on the Mo. River and have the
Missouri River managed in a more fish and wildlife and environmentally
friendly way that will also benefit recreation and people throughout the
basin. Go to: http://www.mraps.org http://www.mraps.org comments will
be accepted through September 20th. The survey only takes a few minutes
to complete and your comments to the COE are very important. We need to
take advantage of this opportunity as a waterfowling community.

Pure and simple. If you want to see more habitat restored along one of
our historical migratory corridors now is the Time to speak up and speak
loudly!

Again pass this on to your friends and family. EAVERYONES HELP IS NEEDED
HERE TO RESTORE VITAL HABITAT THAT HAS BEEN LOST.

Some wish to keep barge navigation as top priority but if you look at the
facts the industry has not materialized as some thought it would. As an
example, in the last 7 years 1 barge has come up river into Iowa. 1 should
we allow navigation to be a priority that it isnt and yet still negatively
effect 188k acres of lost habitat?

Hundreds of migratory species have been negatively effected by past
management and hundreds of native species have been impacted by past
management OF NAVIGATION.

It is time to take back and restore our River and the associated habitats
that have long since been lost. Make no mistake your help and support is
very vital. Take the time and respond to the COE survey on the management.

Again I thank you all for your time and your support IN RESTORING OUR
GREAT RIVER!

Bill

We are planning a trip to the Hawaiian Islands during October and after
doing all of the touristy things, we would like to spend two to four days
birding. As all we know about the Islands, comes from a guide book and
some non-birder friends, any suggestions, experiences, or knowledge about
where to bird on the islands would be greatly appreciated.

Early in the morning I relocated the RED KNOT and its companions, the
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS (5), at the Hawkeye Wildlife Area. But this time

they were closer to the north shore and I scoped them from the DNR
parking lot on Amana Rd. Later in the day these shorebirds were absent
but a SANDERLING was working that shoreline. Sand Point was really poor

We had over a quarter-inch of rain come down between 6:30 (sunrise-ish)
and 7:15 this morning with very little wind. I took the dogs over to the
cemetery about 7:30 under broken, multi-layered cloud cover with bits of
blue sky poking through, and noted a migratory flock of nighthawks at
about 7:45. Approximately 80 nighthawks were in a very compact flock in
steady powered flight just over treetop level heading directly north to
south. I figure they had to have been coming through Minnesota during
the night, and chose to continue as they just caught the back side of
our rain line upon entering Iowa. If they had been roosting close to our
area, they would have been rather soaked and surely not in hurry to
start movement until dried out. Now the sun's out and it's going to cook
up more rain later today.

This evening while scoping from Sand Point (HWA) I spotted
6 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS to the east on a newly exposed island.
Flocked with them was a RED KNOT, gray in color and possibly
a juvenile. They were working their way between resting pelicans,
which dominate the area, probing the muck but would fly together
to other spots. Scoping was distant at at not less than 60X. Other
shorebirds were scattered with no mixed flocks of any size. The
water is surprisingly low and excellent habitat at a maximum.

The northwest section of OTM had the notable birds this morning including
7 COMMON MOORHENS (5 juvs.) and 4 LEAST BITTERNS seen and 2 heard
"quacking". The north/south dike had only a foot of grass but getting to it
required

wading through deeper dew covered vegetation. The dikes at the east end have
been mowed so maybe it will be likewise with the west side soon. I only saw a
few flying Great Egrets but there could have been more in the middle of the
marsh.

I also flushed a Least Bittern on the east side and saw a pair of River Otters
swimming. A couple of Soras were vocal but oddly no Sandhill Cranes were heard.

This morning's dog walk venue was Saylorville Reservoir, where we visited
Cherry Glen, Oak Grove, and Sandpiper Beach. We had 40 species in a couple of
hours. Birds of note included GREEN HERON and WILD TURKEY. Although birds were
pretty numerous, warbler numbers were low. The list follows:

Tonight around 7 p.m. I scoped the SNOWY EGRET from the DNR parking lot
on Amana Rd. It was among 80 Great Egrets standing on an island off the
north shore of HWA. A dozen Caspian Terns were also out there among the
many Ring-billed Gulls and pelicans.

I saw what appeared to be a Mississippi Kite, hovering above the
intersection of 70th & Hickman in Des Moines, at 11:45 this am... Hard to
get a good look, as I sat at the traffic light, and the bird floated by..but
am fairly sure of the ID.

I checked Saylorville this morning, as the water levels are rapidly
dropping. Not much for water birds, but I found a couple of nice
pockets of passerine migrants at Cherry Glen, Polk City WA, and
Sandpiper.

Black-and-white-2
Wilson's-numerous
Nashville-5

Hi I-Birders,

This morning's dog walk, expected to be a 40 minute stroll, turned into a 90
minute Bird Fest. A mile long stretch of the Des Moines River in NW Des Moines
was jumping with birds. Without trying all that hard I tallied nearly 40
species. I saw a dozen or so RT HUMMINGBIRDS along this trail [although there
could easily have been twice that many], while during the breeding season I
might see one or two on a similar walk. There was some WARBLER migration action
as well, including a mixed flock of WILSON'S and NASHVILLEs, a trio of young C
YELLOWTHROATS, and single CHESTNUT-SIDED and AM. REDSTART. The neatest find was
a lovely adult breeding-plumaged female BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, courteously
foraging down low in a close-by shrub. A BG GNATCATCHER was a welcome find as
well, along with YELLOW-THROATED and RED-EYED VIREOS. Also seen were many of
the usual suspects, including oriole, bunting, and titmouse. Some kingfisher
chatter was heard across the river. The ordinarily ubiquitous house wren must
be on vacation this week, as he was conspicuously absent.

Hope you are all experiencing your own touch of migration.

Good Birding,

Stuart Sparkman

For more up to date information on rarities in the state of Iowa, visit the
Iowa Birds and Birding website at www.iowabirds.org. A list of rare birds is
placed on the home page with the location of the rarity and most recent date
of observation. This is updated several times per day. This is a handy tool
for anyone making a birding trip or otherwise into the state of Iowa.

It seems that the hummingbird that was visiting the Armstrongs may have
stopped by the Livingston farm down here. Jeff & crew have informed me
that they have had a female at their feeders for nearly a week. I intend

little critter.

The reservoir is just about back to normal levels and the shorebird habitat
abounds.

But shorebird numbers remain modest with Sand Point the best spot. There I saw
13 species including 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 1 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, and
1 WILLET. Most of Hawkeye's Great Egrets, R.B. Gulls, and pelicans also were in
the

Sand Point Area leaving the west end vacant. Round Pond and Greencastle Ave.
both had a few shorebirds.

Hi I-Birders,

I stopped on the way to work this morning at two puddles of receding
floodwater in a bean field immediately west of the community of Kelley [5 miles
south of Ames, Story County, and home to one of America's last working phone
booths]. There were abundant KILLDEER, a half dozen or so PECTORAL SANDPIPERS,
three LEAST SANDPIPERS, and four EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES. As I scanned the
small flock, I noticed a furtive little character at the margin of the puddle.
Closer inspection revealed him to be a SORA, poking around in the mud, trying
to pass for a peep. Couldn't put one by me, though. A cool unexpected bird
sighting is always a good way to start the day.

Good Birding,

This morning at Nahant Marsh Bob Bryant and I heard a hooting dove. I thought
to myself it couldn't be a Eurasian Collared-Dove. After all, Eurasian
Collared-Dove has been found all over Iowa and now near the Chicago suburbs but
has eluded the Quad Cities for some inexplicable reason (as far as I know
anyway). But I got a good look and lo and behold it was a real-life Eurasian
Collared-Dove!

We also saw an Osprey flying over the marsh.

Harold and his wife, Geraldine will be visiting some friends in the Spencer
area for a few days and he has arranged to give this program. He would be a
great contact for anyone interested in visiting southern Africa and finding
birds while there.

On Friday the Hesters and host Anthony Vodraska will join me for my annual
birthday birding adventure. I would like to find them about 100 new lifers in
North America but we will see if the hot and windy conditions hold off until
later in the day. I apologize for getting this notice out so late but my
computer blew up last weekend and I have been incommunicato until today.

I hope this program will be of interest to some birders on the listserve and
that you can join us for this event. I know I am looking forward to a virtual
Africa bird tour and to confirming that I correctly identified the birds from
South Africa that my boss's wife took pictures of when she was there.

May the birds be with us!!

Hi AJ,

I've got Paulson's book coming in the mail, but for right now I'll hit
you up for a few questions. You got plenty of free time now, right?

Birder thinking- what kind of ballpark percentage of Iowa odes can you
really ID out-of-hand in the field?

Are nets for odes different from nets for butterflies? Where do you guys
get gear from?

Is collecting done as much anymore? Or has it perhaps gone more towards
digital photography?

Using the Iowa Odes website, I've ID'd a flying ode from this morning as
a Wandering Glider (seemingly new for Kossuth). I'm not missing another
option that I could confuse it with am I? Behavioral note: are they
called Gliders because they hunt by continuously flying (as this one
was), and not "perch-and-pounce"?

About Paulson's perhaps missing SE bugs: in looking at range maps from
an online source, it looks like southeastern ones that barely hit or
miss Iowa almost all swing around and get into at least east Texas, so
they should be included in the book.

Thanks for the help,

Matt

The shorebirds at C26 and Georgia are on their last leg, literally, as
there was an adult Lesser Yellowlegs hopping around the area on only one
yellow leg. The water to the west is gone now, and the area to the east
has only a few days' supply left- you'll want to visit in the PM for the
best views. Similar species mix as previously, with no surprises this
morning, but numbers are shrinking.

Audubon Mag. just ran an article on unusual Rufous Hummingbird sightings, in
their March/April 2010 issue. Its titled "The Drifter" and the title line
reads "More and more, rufous hummingbirds are turning up in unusual places.
Is this a result of our changing climate, or are birders paying closer
attention?"

There doesn't seem to be any scientific evidence of range expansion, and
opinions are mixed. The article is an interesting read..

There's a lot more shorebird habitat than shorebirds at HWA now. Today most
were at

Babcock Access in a pool that will dry up in a few more days. There were about
200

of good variety including a juv. RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and 2 juv. WESTERN
SANDPIPERS.

The spot (east side near the shore) requires a bit of walking around the muddy
low areas.

Sand Point had only 100 pecs and peeps with no notables. So for the day I saw
14 species

shorebirds plus a lovely female Prothonotary and N. Waterthrush at the west
end. Pelicans

were in the thousands and Great Egrets numbered 400.

Yesterday I was bemoaning the fact that our nesting pair of
Yellow-throated Warblers were no longer around and that I had never
seen any young ones in the three or four years that they have nested
in the yard. Today I had a few minutes to see what would pop up off
of the back deck and what appeared was a young Yellow-throated
Warbler with the black facial pattern still light and ill-defined.

A juv. WESTERN SANDPIPER was the highlight of the 150 shorebirds that I scoped

along the east side of Sand Point's access road. The water has dropped
dramatically

but Sand Point itself was still underwater.

Round Pond was the Great Egret spot today and I counted 70. But earlier many
more

were reportedly seen there. A large mud flat, now exposed could attract
shorebirds.

The north shore near the DNR now shows a lot of shorebird habitat but had few
today.

But while checking the area out I saw an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER and female
ORCHARD ORIOLE in the trees.

I'm going to partially agree and partially disagree with Ross. I think this
bird is an adult female. I base the age on the heavily worn tail feathers which
should be fresh in immature birds but old and showing wear in adults at this
time of year. It is clearly not an adult male. With adult male, immature male,
and immature female eliminated, I think, that leaves adult female. Pyle
mentions 2nd year males, and I can't quite grasp what they might look like, but
the lack of any random red gorget spots would seem to suggest that it probably
isn't that age/sex class. So, assuming it's an adult female, I think it can
IDed as Rufous based on the slight notch in R2. I'm looking forward to hearing
from someone with a lot of in-hand experience with Rufous/Allen's who can give
us a definitive answer, but in the meantime, it's a good learning experience to
try to sort this out on our own.

Thank you to the Armstongs for their hospitality and to everyone who provided
prompt updates.

Hi all:

I think there is an obvious notch in rectrix 5 (uppermost in the spread-tail
shots) that shows well in the 2nd and 3rd spread-tail photos. This makes it a
Rufous, according to Pyle. Because the notch can actually be seen in these pics
(I understand it's not always very easy to see), I'd hazard a guess that the
bird is a male.

Blackburnian Warbler along the trail near the Conservation Education
Center on the northeast side of the park. It was located in the upper
branches of a walnut tree near a bench on the northwest side of the loop
trail.

Jim Sinclair and I saw the Selasphorus hummingbird at the Armstrongs' this
morning, leaving just after the Allens had arrived. I got a few shots of the
bird with its tail fanned for anyone who wants to try to work out
age/sex/species. Sibley won't help on this one--it's going to take a Pyle I
think.

   Birders

Viewed from a balcony or a low-flying cropduster, SJD and yours truly could
pass for twins. There the resemblance ends,

but I'll second Steve's cautionary message. Like 3- and 4-year gulls, immature
and female hummingbirds are the bane of

my personal ID skills. When I lived on the left coast, many a time I had to be
content with Selaphorus sp.

Subject: [ia-bird] Rufous Hummingbird.

I've read all the reports of the Madison County bird, but no one has provided
any details about why this is a Rufous Hummingbird and not some other species
(especially Allen's Hummingbird). The bird is not an adult male, so any
identification to species should be made with caution. While I agree that the
odds favor it being a Rufous, this alone should not be used a criterion for its
identification. Hopefully, someone can offer additional identification details
on this bird and we can add it to the small list of confirmed Rufous
Hummingbirds found in Iowa.

The Rufous Hummingbird at the Armstrong's was last seen this morning
at about 10AM. It has not been seen since. Noteworthy, the wind
shifted to the north just before 10AM.

Hello I-Birders,

On my way back to DSM from Ames yesterday afternoon I found a SOLITARY
SANDPIPER living up to its name. The bird was in a muddy puddle in a flooded
corn field along CR38 just north of the town of Slater. There were multiple
shorebirds there at that same site in the morning as I zoomed by on the way to
work but, sadly, I didn't have the time to stop.

Good Birding,

placed on the home page with the location of the rarity and most recent date
of observation. This is updated several times per day. This is a handy tool
