After a nice weekend in Oskaloosa at the IOU meeting, I got home to find
parts of our websites (both Iowa Birds and the BBA) had been hacked. I'm
not sure when this happened, but if you logged in at any time since Friday
afternoon, I strongly urge you to run a virus scan for your protection.
Both websites have been shut down until I can clean some things and figure
out how it happened. Will let you all know when we're back in business.

Today Aaron Brees, Jay Gilliam, and I did a big day entirely in Guthrie County
and tallied 146 species. The day began with miserable weather (overcast with
30-40 mph winds) but gradually improved throughout the day. We didn't have any
really outstanding finds, but did see some nice birds as follows:

10 sp. of waterfowl inc. Snow and Ross's geese
2 Least Bitterns
9 sp. of diurnal raptors inc. 2 Swainson's Hawks and 1 Peregrine Falcon
17 sp. of shorebirds inc. 3 flocks of Am. Golden-Plovers, 2 Marbled Godwits,
and a Sanderling
a total of 26 Common Terns at 4 locales
4 Loggerhead Shrikes
15 sp. of warblers inc. Golden-winged and Black-throated Green
a Summer Tanager at Springbrook S.P.
lingering Purple Finches and a Pine Siskin

Subject: [ia-bird] Kentucky Warbler

It's always nice to start an afternoon walk at Moorehead Park with a very
cooperative Kentucky Warbler. I believe this is the third county\park
record. It was about 20 feet from where the last one was seen. The bird
also serenaded me with song as I went to my van about 2 hours later. Other
good birds included a male Northern Parula, Mourning Warbler and 2 male
Golden-winged Warblers.

Good birding,

***NEW!****************
For more up to date information on rarities in the state of Iowa, visit the
Iowa Birds and Birding website at www.iowabirds.org. A list of rare birds is
placed on the home page with the location of the rarity and most recent date
of observation. This is updated several times per day. This is a handy tool
for anyone making a birding trip or otherwise into the state of Iowa.
************************

Species in ALL CAPS can be classified into three categories in the state of
Iowa: 1) UNRECORDED, ACCIDENTAL or Casual; 2) A RARE but regular species; or
3) record early or late date or unusual for time of year. Any species with
three asterisks (***species***) would represent a first record for Iowa
(UNRECORDED) and should be observed and documented very carefully. Species
with two asterisks (**species**) are species that are either ACCIDENTAL,
CASUAL, or a rare regular species, and should also be documented. Species
with one asterisk (*species) should have some details of the observation
provided.

It was a rather cool RBA period along with a rainy end of the week. The
general feeling in Iowa this year is that either many of the neotropical
migrants are flying right over and past Iowa, or they are running about a
week behind, and we need to brace for a major but brief incursion in the
next 7 days. With a few exceptions, Thrushes are not being seen in big
numbers, nor are many Sparrow species. Warblers have been mediocre, with
good variety, but not massive numbers. Shorebirds seem non-existant east of
Interstate 35.

It was an outstanding week for rarities with 7accidental/casual species
being reported, and 1 of the casual species being reported in 2 different
locations. Highlights included a NEOTROPIC CORMORANT near Riverton in
Fremont County, an AUDUBON'S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in Fremont County, GLOSSY
IBIS in Palo Alto County, and the return of the Brookside Park PAINTED
BUNTING in Story County. Other notable reports included WHITE-WINGED DOVE in
Mahaska and Black Hawk Counties, a PRAIRIE WARBLER in Story County, and a
WHIMBREL in Warren County.

Two special yard birds this afternoon. It was night and morning of
incredibly high winds and rain. I awoke to a partial uprooted autumn blaze
maple and a

fallen cherry tree. After securing the newly planted autumn blaze maple and
cleaning up the uprooted cherry tree planted in 1984, the Mourning Warbler
and 1st year Orchard Oriole cheered me up!

We have some excellent photo's of the 1st year Orchard Oriole!

Subject: Kentucky Warbler

It's always nice to start an afternoon walk at Moorehead Park with a very
cooperative Kentucky Warbler. I believe this is the third county\park
record. It was about 20 feet from where the last one was seen. The bird
also serenaded me with song as I went to my van about 2 hours later.
Other good birds included a male Northern Parula, Mourning Warbler and 2
male Golden-winged Warblers.

Good birding,

Pete

The Dallas County Conservation spring bird hike was held Saturday, May 10 at
Voas Nature Center with good attendance this year.

Highlights:
Green Heron (perched in tree)
Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers, along with Lesser Yellowlegs at new wetland.
Philadelphia Vireo
Blue-headed Vireo
15 species of warbler
Great-tailed Grackle

Combine these with the parks regular birds and other migrants and it was a
great morning for birding. Nothing quite as good as my prediction of 227
species found by my IOU co-birders in Osky this weekend though.

Good birding, and at least the sun's shining;

Our Birdathon team (for Big Bluestem Audubon Society) found a male Surf Scoter
this afternoon at the Jewell sewage lagoon. He was on the east side in the
northeast lagoon, located south of IA-175, east of Jewell (Hamilton Co.).

We also found a good concentration of some shorebirds at a flooded field, on the
east side of US-69, south of 150th St. (Story Co.). Highlights included: 17
Willets, 5 Hudsonian Godwits, & 2 Marbled Godwits.

Since I obviously couldn't mow the yard today (which it desperately needed), I
made better use of my time by searching for some of our avian friends.  Some of
the more interesting birds (at least for me) was my FOY yellow warbler (my was
he bright and beautiful!), an American Bittern at Colo Bogs on the edge of some
tall grass which made it nearly impossible to distinguish himself from, a
common yellowthroat,  and best of all my first close encounter with a Peregrine
Falcon.  I was coming home on my road just south of Nevada when he swooped
(more like shot) across the road just a short distance ahead of my truck.  A
fantastic sight!  I also find myself in a bit of a quandry about a bird I saw
today at our feeders.  There are many rose breasted grosbeaks around as many of
you have indicated.  We have 3-4 adult males and at least 2 females.  Today we
noticed one "female" which had some obvious yellow on its breast with only a
scant amount of light

streaks on the lateral edges of the breast.  No red, rosy, or black color, at
least yet.  These 2 "females" are definitely different from one another, as we
got to observe them in close proximity to one another.  I did get pictures
(although not digital) and will be happy to post them as soon as I get them.  I
note that the female black headed grosbeak can look very similar to a female
red breasted, as well as a first fall male red breasted.  I am sure that this
is far-fetched to suggest it is a black headed female, but I would love to have
any input on this.  I have been assured by at least one person that it is rose
breasted based on my description, however, I thought I should at least throw it
out there they were so different (and it's not Fall anymore!).

From: Art Check <artsbirdbrain AT yahoo.com>

I just read an article by Joseph Morlan which was written in 1987 I believe
which talks about the differences between black headed and rose breasted
grosbeaks.  He feels that in terms of field identification the call may be the
main difference (I did not hear it call), and also the upper bill may be darker
in the black headed more so than in the rose breasted.  He admits that at least
at that time many of the field guides did not truly show that difference
correctly.  He also mentions (as do a couple of field guides) that the two
species may hybridize, but this sounds like it would be more common further to
the west where the 2 ranges overlap more.  Is this what would be known as
rambling, or possibly talking to oneself?  Sorry.

I should also mention that today at Colo Bogs I saw amongst many many coots a
very pale form of one that at first I thought was a chicken:)   I suppose it
may be an immature, but thought it perhaps was more likely a (sorry I know I'm
going to get this wrong) leucistic variety.  At any rate, it was much paler
than any other coot I've seen.  It was seen in the pasture on the north side of
Lincoln Hiway.

Saw 4 adult male Scarlet Tanagers today at Brookside Park in between rain
sessions. One was feeding on the ground near the fire truck and the other
three moments later also on the ground at the NW corner adjacent to the
most northernly located basebal diamond. Got photo's of two sitting side
by side. I could not locate the painted bunting. Lots of other birds but
nothing unusual for this time of year.

Hello All,

Sorry for the late post. Our bird discussion group from ISU went birding

we had were:

Ovenbird
Magnolia Warbler
Nashville Warbler
Orange-crownded Warbler
Northern Parula
Yellow-rumped Warbler
American Redstart
Northern Waterthrush
Wood Thrush
Great-crested Flycatcher
Eastern Pheobe

No luck with the Painted Bunting but we're going to try again soon.

Steve Dinsmore also sighted a White-faced Ibis in Boone Co. late this
morning in a private wetland North of Hwy 30 between V and W Aves.

Here in Manson I have had Harris Sparrows all winter, with many new
migrants the past few weeks.

Today a Clay-colored Sparrow showed up for the first time this Spring.

They have finally arrived! While I have seen a number of early birds at
Moorehead this spring, today saw the biggest influx of many migrants.
Large number of sparrows and Swainson's Thrush were prominent. There were
16 species of warbler as well. The best were Blackburnian, 3
Chestnut-sided, 2 Magnolia, and a Black-throated Green Warbler. There was
also 8 American Redstart, 14 Black and White Warbler, and 15 Ovenbirds.
In addition to the Swainson's there were Gray-cheecked Thrush and Veery.
A late Red-breasted Nuthatch was hanging around the suspension bridge.

Good birding,

Pete

I took a walk this morning 11:00-12:00 from Bob Shetler to Cottonwood and back
(south of Saylorville Dam). Most unexpected was a HENSLOW'S SPARROW in a small
unmowed patch of cool-season grass at Cottonwood at the intersection to the
fishing pier. It had to be only about an acre or so of grass, with trees along
the long edge and scattered small trees through the grass. He sang several
times and I got a great look at him from the road. Other birds of interest
were:

Great Egret
Green Heron
Forster's Tern
Least Flycatcher
Tennessee Warbler
Magnolia Warbler (FOY)
Wilson's Warbler (FOY)
Yellow Warbler
Northern Waterthrush
Ovenbird

Sharon and I spent a few days at Crane Creek SP which is located just East of
Toledo Ohio on the south shore of Lake Erie. This is a migrant trap well known
to birders who come from all over the country to see the birds. There is a
boardwalk thru a small patch of woods which is bordered on one side by Lake
Erie and on the other by marsh. Bird numbers vary day by day depending on
weather but on a good day it can be spectacular.

Below is a link to a few photos taken while we were there.

Hello,
There was a light rain falling during my morning walk through Ledges State
Park this morning, but that didn't keep the birds away. There was a great deal
of bird activity, and I tallied 11 species of warblers.

Least Flycatcher
Willow Flycatcher (FOY)
Great Crested Flycatcher - numerous and vocal
Yellow-Throated Vireo - at least a dozen
Warbling Vireo (FOY)
3 Louisiana Waterthrushes
Black-Throated Green, Wilson's, Yellow-Throated, Tennessee, Nashville,
Yellow-Rumped, and Yellow Warblers, Common Yellowthroat, Ovenbird, N Parula

Yesterday I neglected to report a silent empid at Fossil Prairie Park in Floyd
Co. I can't be certain, but my hunch is that it was an Alder Flycatcher.

Looking forward to birding with many of you tomorrow morning!

yesterday evening we scared up a bunch of bw teal and shovelers out of a

got up with them and flew overhead in a westerly direction.

Trekking back an hour later at dusk an American Bittern flew down the
trail overhead.

Hi Birders,

The Neotropic Cormorant, previously reported by Steve Dinsmore, was
still present today at 11:00 AM in the private marsh just west of
Riverton WMA in Fremont County, IA. It was with several Double-
crested Cormorants on a mound used as a hunting blind. The marsh is
located on the south side of the road.

At Riverton WMA, we saw two Hudsonian Godwits in a flooded field.

At Copeland Bend, east of Nebraska City and west of I-29, on Highway
2, the Bald Eagle nest on the south side of the road was occupied by
a young eagle with two adults in attendance.

Hello,
This morning in Mitchell County, I had a few new arrivals:
Green Heron
Upland Sandpiper (FOY)
Red-Headed Woodpecker
Sedge Wren
Common Yellowthroat
White-Crowned Sparrow
Great-Tailed Grackle

I visited Idlewild Park in Floyd County, around midday. It was quiet, but I did
find my first Wood Thrush of the year.

I also walked the prairie trail at the Rockford Fossil Park, and found a few
more good birds:

Redhead
Sora
Sedge Wren
Palm Warbler
Nashville Warbler
Yellow Warbler
Bobolink (FOY)
Clay-Colored Sparrow
Henslow's Sparrow
Grasshopper Sparrow

ALERT: After my walk, I found 3 ticks on me, my first of the year. Happy tick
season! (I wish there were a way to feed them to the birds)

Back home in Boone County this afternoon, I found my first Harris's Sparrow of
the year on my feeders. Indigo Buntings and Baltimore Orioles have also begun
visiting my feeders in the past few days. Between them and the Goldfinches and
Grosbeaks, my backyard is in Technicolor!

Subject: New Arrivals
From: "Tucker J. Lutter" <lutter AT netins.net>
Date: Thu, 8 May 2008 09:41:24 -0400
Bronson-Woodbury Co-May 7, 2008:
Hello Birders, yesterday evening was a good time to be out to look for
migrants. Not much was out but a few new arrivals included Ruby-throated
Hummingbird, Red-headed Woodpecker, Eastern Kingbird, and Nashville
Warbler. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird was seen at my hummingbird feeder
when we arrived home from the zoo late this afternoon while the Eastern
Kingbird and Nashville Warblers were seen along the creek in town along
with multiple Red-headed Woodpeckers just after that. The Nashville
Warbler is a new species for the town I live in, and now the list for the
area is 170+. I also saw a few sparrows yesterday with both towhees being
highlight species.

Highlights:
Nasville Warbler-2 (foy)
Ruby-throated Hummingbird-1 (foy)
Eastern Kingbird-1 (foy)
Red-headed Woodpecker-4+
Spotted Towhee-1 (continues)
and the usual...

Good Birding,

Subject: WILLET & BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER L&D 14, SCOTT CO
From: Robinson Donald G <RobinsonDonaldG AT JohnDeere.com>
Date: Thu, 8 May 2008 08:08:29 -0500

Wednesday evening there was Willet and a Black-bellied Plover at Lock &
Dam #14, seen from the Illinois side at Fisherman's Cove Campground. The
campground is just east above the dam. Park by the restrooms and walk
out to the viewing platform.

I went to the Cove to see if there were any terns over the shallow pond
area. There was no pond, as the gates of the dam are open. The
resulting mud-flats made for some temporary shorbird habitat.

The Willet & Plover were hanging together, with a few Spotted Sandpipers
in the area as well. The Plover was in transition to breeding plumage,
but the ID was made easy when they both flew from one side to the other,
showing the wing stipes on the Willet and the black "armpits" of the
Plover.

Subject: Canada Geese/Barn Landing

Wednesday evening around 8 pm while I was in our front yard two Canada geese
began their descent honking as they came in for a landing on top of our barn
roof.

They stayed for a split second and then took off again.

  A truly amazing feat!
