St. John's County:

1/23-4/11/08--Brown Booby, St. John's County, St. Augustine Beach. Observer:
M.ob. Directions: From I-95 south of St. Augustine, take Rt. 206 east to A1A
and head north.  (DeLORME p.g 68) Booby seen at end of pier (fee).  

 

Volusia County:

12/31/07-3/27/08--Juv. Great Cormorant, Volusia County, Ponce Inlet.
Observer: M.ob. Directions: In Port Orange, head west on A1A then follow A1A
to Ponce Inlet State Park (fee) (DeLORME p. 75). Cormorant on top of tower
at end of north jetty.  Scope necessary.

 

Brevard County:

4/20/08--Female Ruff (Reeve), Merritt Island NWR, Brevard County. Observer:
Dexter Richardson, Christian Newton, John Hintermister, Carl Edwards, Danny
Bales, Mitchell H, and a few others. Directions: Off I-95, exit Rt. 406,
head east. Go through Titusville, over U.S 1, onto Merritt Island (road
becomes Rt. 402). (DeLORME p.81) After passing visitor's center and closed
headquarters building, take the next right (unmarked and sandy drive go
through Chain link fenced gate) this is Peacock Pocket Rd. Drive for a
couple miles, road will bend to right.  Intercostals will be on your left
and marshy area to your right.  Drive 0.5. miles or so and look for 2x4 type
pylons sticking out of the water on the left.  Reeve seen to the right with
mixed flock of shorebirds in the marshy area.

 

Polk County:

4/8/08--Lark Sparrow, Polk County, Lake Wales. Observer: Anna Clarke.
Directions: From Rt. 27 just south of Lake Wales, head East on Rt. 60, then
south on 27A (Scenic Highway). Turn left onto Ridge Manor Dr., and then
right onto Lorraine Cir., this will end at Santa Maria Rd.  Look for
abandoned orange grove. (DeLORME P.g 93) Sparrow has been seen twice along
the edge of the orange grove. Birders please bird from the road only as
grove is privately owned.

 

Citrus County:

4/13/08--Eared Grebe, Citrus County, Ft. Island Gulf Beach. Observers: Tom
Palmer, Murray Gardler, Judy B. Directions: From Rt.19 just south of the
town of Crystal River, follow Rt. 44 west out to Ft. Island Gulf Beach.
(DeLORME p.g 76/77) Grebe seen to left of beach area.

 

Miami-Dade County:

4/8/08--LaSagra's Flycatcher (probable), Miami-Dade County, "Lucky Hammock".
Observer: Trey Mitchell. Directions: From Florida City, go west on SR
9336/Palm Drive/SW 34 Street. Turn left on SW 232 Avenue/Aerojet Road.
"Lucky Hammock" will be large cluster of trees on your right. (DeLORME
p.122) Flycatcher observed first in "Lucky Hammock" and then later was not
relocated.

 

Dry Tortugas National Park:

3/26/08--Loggerhead Kingbird, Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas National Park.
Reporter: Larry Manfredi, observers: M.ob. Directions: Get or rent boat,
head west 70 miles, off of Key West. (DeLORME p.g 126) Kingbird was located
in the campground area in the fort. Kingbird has been seen for the last
week.

4/12/08-- Immature Black Noddy, Dry Tortugas National Park. Reporter: Murray
Gardler, observer: Larry Manfredi. Directions: Get or rent boat, head west
70 miles off of Key West. (DeLORME p.g 126)

4/26/08--1st cycle Black-headed Gull, Merritt Island NWR, Brevard 
County. Observer: Reinhard Geisler. Directions: Off I-95, exit Rt. 406, 
head East. Go through Titusville, past U.S 1, onto Merritt Island, road 
becomes Rt. 402, (DeLORME p.81). After passing visitors' center and 
closed headquarters building, take next right (Peacock Pocket 
Rd.--unmarked and sandy road passing through gated chain link fence). 
Drive 2.5 miles until road bends to right, intercoastal on left, marshy 
area on right.  Drive 0.9 miles (0.3 miles before several 2x4 type 
pylons sticking out of water on left as reported for the ruff). Bird 
seen in the canal on the road alongside the road. GPS coordinates at 
which spot bird had been seen from road: N28 36.248 W80 44.470

Gull has not been seen since the 26th.

sticking out of water on left.  Reeve seen 0.2 mi. further. Detail: (R. 
Geisler) Once you turn on Peacock Pocket Rd, bird seen at 3.9 Miles 
after the turn, on the ride side (2.5 Miles until road bends right, 1.2 
Miles until 2x4 style pylons sticking out of the water on the left, 0.2 
Miles until marshy area to the right).  GPS coordinates at which spot 
bird seen from road: N28 36.174 W80 44.815

Trey Mitchell, Roberto "Toe" Torres. Directions: From FL Turnpike (south
Miami) go to SW 216th St., head east, turn right on Old Cutler Rd. then left
onto 224 St. The wetlands will be on your right. Park along perimeter of
wetlands on north or east sides, or inside the apartment complex on the
west. (DeLORME 119) sandpiper seen in the Cutler Bay area

Island (Key West). Reporter: Bev Hansen, observers: Murray Gardler and Carl
Goodrich. Directions: From the North: From U.S 1 South, turn right into
College Rd. then right at the Bayshore Manor driveway. Parking is available
at the end of the driveway. (fee) (DeLORME P.g 127)  Vireo first observed
around 2PM feeding in a fig tree next to the walkway closest to golf course,
vireo was not relocated around 4PM.

Park. Observer: m.ob. Directions:  From I-275 (south) take exit #17 
(Rt.682, look for brown sign to Fort), head west, then south on Rt. 679, 
to Fort Desoto  Park. (DeLORME p. 90). Bird seen in first section of 
East Beach woods.  After entering park, turn left (east) at T 
intersection, park in east end of first large parking lot past visitors' 
center and walk toward water. Path through woods turns to left beyond 
picnic area.

M.ob. Directions: Off I-95, exit Rt. 406, head East. Go through Titusville,
past U.S 1, onto Merritt Island, road becomes Rt. 402, (DeLORME p.81). After
passing visitors' center and closed headquarters building, take next right
(Peacock Pocket Rd.--unmarked and sandy road passing through gated chain
link fence). Drive approx. two miles until road bends to right, intercoastal
on left, marshy area on right.  Drive approx. one-half mile; look for
several 2x4 type pylons sticking out of water on left.  Reeve seen to right,
with mixed flock of shorebirds in marshy area.

coaling dock; both individuals favor the northernmost pilings adjacent to
northernmost large horizontal wood beam structure; best viewed in late

right onto Lorraine Cir., this will end at Santa Maria Rd.  Look for
abandoned orange grove. (DeLORME P.g 93) Sparrow has been seen twice along
the edge of the orange grove. Birders please bird from the road only as
grove is privately owned.

beach. Turn north on A1A (Atlantic Ave.). Go north on A1A about 2.0 miles.
There is beachfront park - Frank Rendon Park. Park at this park and walk the
beach. (DeLORME p.75) Vehicles allowed on beach, but must be off beaches at
dusk. 

 

2/20-3/13/08—1st Cycle Glaucous Gull, Volusia County, Daytona Beach.

at Port Orange. Take Rt. 421, Dunlawton Ave., across the bridge to the
beach. Turn north on A1A (Atlantic Ave.). Go north on A1A about 2.0 miles.

3/21/08--Great Cormorant, Volusia County, Ponce Inlet. Observer: M.ob.
Directions: In Port Orange, head west on A1A then follow A1A to Ponce Inlet
State Park (fee) (DeLORME p. 75).  Great Cormorant on top of tower at end of
north jetty, can be seen from either Ponce Inlet (Daytona - north side), or
Smyrna Dunes Park, by driving up the beach or walking the boardwalk. Scope
necessary.

 

Seminole County:

11/29-3/3/08--Male Vermilion Flycatcher, Seminole County, Sanford.
Observers: m.ob. Directions: From Rt. 417, exit at Rt.427 head East short
distance, turn North (right) onto Lake Mary Blvd, then immediately turn
right onto Sanford Ave, then left onto Pine Way Rd., then right onto
Mellonville Ave., then left onto Oakway Lane.  Follow road to parking area.
Take Red Trail, stay on Red Trail as it bears left, follow trail for about ¼
mile, trail will open up to a pasture area. (DeLORME p.g 80)  Flycatcher
seen in Easterly side of pasture area.  

 

Lake County:

12/21-3/22/08--Say’s Phoebe, Lake County, Ranch Road, Northwest Lake Apopka.
Observers: M.ob. Directions: Going north on Rt. 561 north of Clermont, turn
east on Rt. 48 in Astatula.  Drive a mile or so and turn right (east) onto
Ranch Road.  Look for large pole barn on right. (DeLORME p.g 79).  Phoebe
seen in pasture next to pole barn and in pasture across the road, check
along all fences in this area. Pastures are private, but can be easily
scanned from Ranch Rd.

 

Orange County:

3/13-3/23/08-- 2nd year male Yellow-headed Blackbird, Orange County, Lake
Killarney, Winter Park. Observer: M.ob. Directions:  From I-4, take SR 426
exit (W. Fairbanks Ave.) and head east. Turn north (left) onto S. Orlando
Ave. Travel north to Beachview Dr. which is the road before Houston's
restaurant. Turn left and park long the sides of the road. (DeLORME p. 80)
Bird is in clumps of vegetation just beyond the STOP sign at the end of the
road at the edge of the lake with other blackbird species. Another location
is across Orlando Ave, behind the Best Western in the tall grasses along the
pond.

 

Brevard County:

3/5/08-- Immature light-morph Swainson's Hawk, Brevard County, Merritt
Island NWR. Observer: David Freeland. Directions: Off I-95, exit Rt. 406
head east go through Titusville, cross over U.S 1, onto Merritt Island
continue driving to refuge entrance. (DeLORME p.g 81/82)  Hawk seen in the
vicinity of Route 402 and 406. Best to start looking right after the Marina
area.

 

2/12-2/25/08--Adult California Gull, Brevard County, West Cocoa, Brevard
County Landfill. Observer: Lyn and Brooks Atherton. Directions: From I-95 by
Exit 201. Go west on Route 520 about 1-3/4 miles and turn right on Route
524.  After 4/10 mile, turn left on Adamson Rd. and proceed 2.0 miles to
landfill entrance on left. Sign in at the weigh-in building and sign out
when you exit.  Please make sure to pull off the road fully when scanning
for gulls. Main gull resting area is straight ahead past the first lake, and
the birds are spread over five large roosting sites in the flat
dirt-and-grass fields left of the roadway.

 

2/29/08--1st cycle Thayer’s Gull, Brevard County, West Cocoa, Brevard County
Landfill. Observer: Mitchell Harris, Phyllis Mansfield. Directions: From
I-95 by Exit 201. Go west on Route 520 about 1-3/4 miles and turn right on
Route 524. After 4/10 mile, turn left on Adamson Rd. and proceed 2.0 miles
to landfill entrance on left. Sign in at the weigh-in building and sign out
when you exit.  Please make sure to pull off the road fully when scanning
for gulls. Main gull resting area is straight ahead past the first lake, and
the birds are spread over five large roosting sites in the flat
dirt-and-grass fields left of the roadway.

 

Manatee County:

3/15/08--Ross's Goose, Manatee County, Ellenton.  Reporter: Peter Rice.
Directions: Exit I-75 at Ellenton Outlet Mall. Look in area east of mall,
especially near water and grassy areas. Formerly seen US-301 about 4/5th of
a mile east of I-75 and the Ellenton Mall (Prime Outlets), associating with
Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

 

Lee County:

2/10-3/11/08--Lazuli Bunting, Lee County, Alva. House owners: Lois and Leon
White, 21281 Pearl Street. Directions: From I-75 exit Hwy. 80 head east.
Turn north, over the Caloosahatchee bridge onto Broadway, make an immediate
left onto Pearl St. by the Alva Post Office. (DeLORME p. 105) Bunting is
feeding on several feeders at the green/gray color house that is left to the
house right across from the post office on Pearl St. House has white mail
box in front that reads “News Press”. Best time 7:00-7:30AM or late
afternoon. Painted and Indigo Buntings present as well. E-mail of house

Miami-Dade County:

1/9-3/16/08--Brown-crested Flycatcher, Miami-Dade County, Royal Palm,
Everglades National park. Observer: M.ob. Directions: From Florida City, go
west on SR 9336/Palm Drive/SW 34 Street to entrance of ENP ($10.00 fee).
Follow main road to Royal Palm/Anhinga Trail/Gumbo Limbo trail. Turn left
into Royal Palm and drive 0.8 miles. Turn right toward the research centers
and drive 0.2 miles, reaching the eastern terminus of Research Road.
Continue toward Hidden Lake on the graded road for ~120-150 yards. (DeLORME
p.g 122).  Flycatchers where calling from both sides of the road in hammock
area of the graded road.

 

3/3-3/15/08--2 Brant Geese, Dade-Monroe County line. Observer: M.ob.
Directions: From end of Florida Turnpike at Florida City continue south on
U.S 1 toward Key Largo. Turn left on Card Sound Rd. (Rt. 997) and continue
south, go past toll booth and park on side of road before reaching Card
Sound Bridge. (DeLORME p.g122-123) Walk toward bridge on north side and scan
flats to north about 250 yards away. 

 

Broward County:

2/13-3/5/08--Bananaquit, Broward County, N. Southlake Drive, Hollywood, FL.
Observer: m.ob. Directions: From I-95 or FL Turnpike head east on (Rt. 820)
Hollywood Blvd. exit in Hollywood. Cross over U.S. 1 still heading east and
look for S 11th Ave. Turn right (south), third street is N. Southlake Drive,
turn left on N. Southlake Drive and park along road or at the end of S 11th
Ave. (DeLORME p.g 115) Bananaquit seen between S 11th Ave and S 10th Ave on
N. Southlake Drive, in the yards of house #’s 1011, 1050, 1023 (on the
telephone line), and #1045. 

Bird was observed calling several times while foraging and best seen in the
AM.  Birders please stay on side of road and do not enter yards of private
residences.

 

12/16/07-3/8/08--Great Cormorant, John U. Lloyd State Recreation Area,
Broward County. Observer: M.ob. Directions: John U. Lloyd SRA is just south
of Port Everglades. From US-1 in Dania, drive east on SR-A1A (Dania Beach
Boulevard) and follow signs to entrance. (Fee) (DeLORME P.115) Cormorant can
be seen perched on the Port Everglades Channel Marker #5, park at last
parking lot and walk out to beach area. Scope Needed.

exit at Daniels Parkway (Exit 131). Drive west 2.5 miles to Six Mile Cypress
Parkway. Turn right and drive north 1.8 miles to Penzance Boulevard. Turn
right into the preserve parking area.  From I-75 southbound, exit at
Colonial Boulevard (Exit 136). Drive west 0.5 miles to Six Mile Cypress
Parkway. Turn left and drive south 3.0 miles to Penzance Boulevard. Turn
left into the preserve parking area. (DeLORME p.g 105) Warbler observed
briefly by out of state birder between Otter Pond and the exit of the trail.

3/14/08-- 2nd year male Yellow-headed Blackbird, Orange County, Winter Park.
Observer: Sarasota Audubon, Alex Vinokur. Directions:  From I-4, take SR 426
exit (W. Fairbanks Ave.) and head east. Turn north onto S. Orlando Ave. Best
Western is at 110 S. Orlando, at Morse Blvd. intersection. (DeLORME p.g 80)
Bird is in small lake behind motel; check all clumps of large grasses along
lake. Seems to be associating with Red-wing Blackbirds.

3/13/08--1st Cycle Glaucous Gull, Volusia County, Daytona Beach. 
Observer: Michael Brothers. Directions:  From I-95, exit 256 (Dunlawton 
Ave.) at Port Orange. Take Rt. 421, Dunlawton Ave., across the bridge to 
the beach. Turn north on A1A (Atlantic Ave.). Go north on A1A about 2.0 
miles. There is beachfront park - Frank  Rendon Park. Park at this park 
and walk the beach. (DeLORME p.75) Vehicles allowed on beach, but must 
be off beaches at dusk. Gulls start to roost on beaches around 5PM.

County. Observer: M.ob. Directions: John U. Lloyd SRA is just south of Port
Everglades. From US-1 in Dania, drive east on SR-A1A (Dania Beach Boulevard)
and follow signs to entrance. (Fee) (DeLORME P.115) Cormorant can be seen
perched on the Port Everglades Channel Marker #5, park at last parking lot
and walk out to beach area. Scope Needed.

White, 21281 Pearl Street. Directions: From I-75 exit Hwy. 80 head east.
Turn north, over the Caloosahatchee bridge onto Broadway, make an
immediate left onto Pearl St. by the Alva Post Office. (DeLORME p. 105)
Bunting is feeding on several feeders at the green/gray color house that
is left to the house right across from the post office on Pearl St.
House has white mail box in front that reads “News Press”.  Best time
8:00-8:30 a.m. or late afternoon.  E-mail of house owners: loismcwhite 
AT sbcglobal.net.  Indigo Buntings, Goldfinches also preent.

Observers: M.ob. Directions: Going north on Rt. 561 north of Clermont, turn
east on Rt. 48 in Astatula.  Drive a mile or so and turn right (east) onto
Ranch Road.  Look for large pole barn on right. (DeLORME p.g 79).  Phoebe
seen in pasture next to pole barn and in pasture across the road, check
along all fences in this area. Pastures are private, but can be easily
scanned from Ranch Rd.

From end of Florida Turnpike at Florida City continue south on U.S 1 toward
Key Largo. Turn left on Card Sound Rd. (Rt. 997) and continue south, go past
toll booth and park on side of road before reaching Card Sound Bridge.
(DeLORME p.g122-123) Walk toward bridge on north side and scan flats to
north about 250 yards away. Brant at times behind flock of White Pelicans.
