Subject: 8/2/10--Fork-tailed Flycatcher (revised), Collier County

8/2/10--Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Collier County, Keewaydin Island.
Correction by Craig Faanes: All of the state land on Keewaydin is open
for public use and to be traveled on and over. Also, all land in FL
below the mean high tide line is public land. All anyone has to do is
land their boat in the sand of the island and walk ashore. Almost any
land that is not built on, especially in the southern 3/4 of the island,
will be public land that is open for the public to use. Boats can be
rented from several locations in Marco Island - Cedar Bay Yacht Club is
a great place to get one. And from Cedar Bay to the south tip of
Keewaydin takes about 25 minutes.

8/2/10--Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Collier County, Keewaydin Island.
Observer: Sarah Funck et al. Reported: Phil Allman. Directions (by Phil
Allman): Keewaydin Island is located between Naples and Marco Island and
serves as a barrier island to Rookery Bay. The island can only be
accessed by boat. There is a small boat launch at Rookery Bay National
Estuarine Research Reserve (end of Shell Island Road, off of HWY-951
south toward Marco Island). Marco Island may also have a few boat
launches. There are no landing spots on the island so visiters would
have to anchor off the beach and swim in. The island has a few private
homes but is primarily owned by the state (some property belongs to RBNERR).

Subject: 3/18/10--Slaty-backed Gull (possible), Volusia County

3/18/10--1st winter Slaty-backed Gull (possible), Volusia County, Daytona
Beach Shores. Observer: Michael Brothers. Directions: Take U.S. 95 to Port
Orange exit (#256). Head east on Dunlawton Ave. (Rt. 421). Stay on Dunlawton
Ave. across the bridge until it dead ends at Atlantic Ave. Turn north (left)
on Atlantic Ave. Go about 2.0 miles north until you come to pedestrian
walkover across Atlantic Ave. Just before walkway there is a small
beachside park on right (Frank Rendon Park, 2705 S. Atlantic Ave, Daytona
Beach Shores- DeLORME p.g 75). Gull has been seen roosting just south of
Frank Rendon Park. Look for the gulls roosting on the beach up to 10,000
gulls are roosting here. As this would be a very rare gull for the south
east pictures of the gull have been sent out to experts and discussion is
ongoing. Birders that go looking for the gull should look for: Gull has a
very bleached out white head and underparts, and also dark back feathers
molting in. The legs were dark, hot pink. The primaries had a distinct
"Venetian Blind" effect. (This is caused by pale inner webs and dark outer
webs of the outer primaries. It is a feature commonly associated with 1st
year Thayer's Gulls.) Also the under wing primaries are very pale. I thought
that the in-coming feathers on the back are not dark enough for
Slaty-backed, although you will see that they are darker than the
surrounding Herring and Ring-billed Gulls. Feedback from some of the experts
has said that this is not out of range for a 1st cycle Slaty-back. The tone
of these feathers was about the same as the Laughing Gulls. It was about
the same size as a medium-sized Herring Gull close by, smaller than a large
Herring Gull near it. Photos by Michael Brothers.

3/14/10--Surfbird, Levy County. Observer: Bob Wallace. Directions (per
Bob Wallace): only reachable by very shallow draft skiff or kayak. On a
rising tide (not falling, it will be too low for anything but a kayak),
you can put in at Shell Mound. Otherwise you have to put in at Cedar
Key ramp, and motor around to the west side of the island and run north
for 4-5 miles, past #4 channel and Derrick Key.

If you draw a line from the fishing pier at Shell Mound, southwest to
Derrick Key (you can see a small island with some mangroves and a mound
of white sand 4' above the water level), the spot where the Surfbird was
roosting was the southern most beach/oysterbar/outer edge of the salt
marsh, with noticeable white sand and a large dead log/stump on top of
the highest point. However, there are many other similar spots where
the tops of oysterbars are exposed at high tide, so you may need to
explore beyond this point. Dont go on a falling tide, as the birds
spread out all over feeding on the mudflats.

3/6/10--Ash-throated Flycatcher, Alachua County, La Chua trail, Payne's
Prairie Preserve State Park. Observer: John Killian. Directions (John
Killian): Find the intersection of FL26 (University Ave), FL24

Within a quarter of a mile, FL26 (University Ave) will form two lanes
that continue due east. FL20 (Hawthorne Road) will form two lanes that
will bear to the right. Stay right on FL20. Almost immediately, turn
right onto SE 15th St. Follow SE 15th St. south. When SE 15th St
begins to make a large left hand turn to become SE 41 AV.,continue
straight (south). There will be a stop sign at a small intersection at
the entrance of a neighborhood. Continue straight through a catteguard
gate. This will take you to the parking lot for La Chua Trail. At the
south end of the parking lot, to the right of the kiosk, will be the
beginning of the trail. Cross the Gainesville-Hawthorne Bike Trail, pay
entrance fee at the self-pay station and continue onto Payne's Prairie.
The bird was seen on the right (north) side of the trail as you are
walking out toward the observation deck. It was 300-400 meters past
the concrete waterworks and maybe 50 meters before the bench found at
  the "hairpin" turn.
