Details on CTBirds. However so much more is happening that birders might be paying attention elsewhere this weekend. Also, with the fine migration weather the kite just might decide to move on. If you have been putting off seeing this bird you might want to get moving before it does! From Paul Cianfaglione and Tom Sayers: 08/27/10 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER. Bird flew in to the area of recently cut sod. As it circled the area, it's flight call was heard. I told Tom that this must be a Pectoral Sandpiper trying to land, but it was the Baird's. Sibley's Guide mentions the Baird's Sandpiper flight call as a rough kreep; reminiscent of a Pectoral Sandpiper. From Sara Zagorski: 08/27/10 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- Baird's Sandpiper hanging out at the big puddle on the main dirt road, near where all the trucks are working. From Alex Burdo and James Orrico: 08/27/10 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- aprox. 2:30-4:45, Baird's Sandpiper in a field adjacent to the large puddle, past the 3-4 trees. From Dave Provencher: 08/27/10 - Groton, Bluff Point -- Very nice movement of birds through here, 2,000+ warblers is admittedly rather conservative. This included Tennessee Warbler (1); Oporonis species (3 seen in flight going away. One likely CT and one likely Mourning, but I'm not calling; Wilson's Warbler (2), Hooded Warbler (1), Bobolink (10+). Editor's Note: Catch the right morning (see Dave's posts on CTBirds about doing that) and this spot can be amazing... and incredibly frustrating for even the most advanced birders. But even for the rank and file like myself it can still be great fun. From Wayne Meagher via Paul Carrier: 08/27/10 - Colebrook, Colebrook reservoir -- over 14 species of warblers, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. From Paul Carrier: 08/27/10 - New Hartford, West Hill Rd -- On left near the top are a line of tall Spruce trees, a CAPE-MAY WARBLER. New Hartford, Stub Hollow Rd -- 1 Stub Hollow Rd on right in wet area just off Rd by stream. From Brendan Murtha: 08/27/10 - Greenwich, Greenwich Point -- about 11:00, one WHITE RUMPED SANDPIPER. From Jay Kaplan and Bill Asteriades: 08/27/10 - Milford, Milford Point -- 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER. From Judy Moore: 08/27/10 - Woodbridge yard -- Six Common Nighthawks heading SW at 6:45 PM. From Paul Desjardins: 08/26/10 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- morning, a Baird's Sandpiper feeding in the area where they are removing turf. From Paul Carrier: 08/26/10 - Bakersville, Bakersville swamp -- 1 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher. From Greg Hanisek: 08/26/10 - Middlebury, Sperry Pond -- 1 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, 1 flyby COMMON NIGHTHAWK. From Jayne Amico: 08/26/10 - Meriden -- Several hundred COMMON NIGHTHAWKS. From Brenda Inskeep: 08/26/10 - Stamford, Cove Island Park, sanctuary -- starting at 6:45 pm, at least 20 in all flying over and towards Wallack's Point where I could see them at a distance feeding for a while before they moved on. From Carol & Gary Lemmon: 08/26/10 - Branford yard -- late afternoon, several Common Nighthawks flying over our yard. Could not get an accurate count, too many trees in the way. From Tony Hager: 08/26/10 - Chester/Haddam town line, Rt 154 -- imm. Northern Goshawk sitting on wire. From Chris Loscalzo: 08/26/10 - Westbrook/Clinton border, in the Menunketesuck River Marsh - 18 LITTLE BLUE HERONS: 9 adults, 8 juveniles, and one mottled second year bird. From Frank Mantlik: 08/25/10 - Fairfield, along I-95 -- 5:45 pm, 30+ Common Nighthawks, with most near Exits 20-22, especially over the pond on Mill River. Very localized, as I saw none anywhere else during my ride home. From Sean, Brendan, and Graham Murtha: 08/25/10 - Westport, Sherwood Island State Park -- 6-7 pm, at least 20 Common Nighthawks. Also Peregrine Falcon. Westport, Grace Salmon Park -- just after dark, 1 Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. From Brian Hiller: 08/25/10 - Bolton(?), Bolton Notch -- between 7:20 and 8:00, a group of nighthawks was working the currents over Bolton Notch, near where I-384 begins at Rte 6. A lone individual started at 7:20pm and was eventually joined by more than 30 others. This is the first "big" group of nighthawks I've seen but I expect to see larger flocks in the next week or so. Last year during this week there were more than 200 over Silver Lane and I-384 in Manchester. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). From scanning the reports early and late birders got the best looks, possibly the only good ones. For the important details see CTBirds (and thanks to all who keep CTBirds up to date with that information!) From John Oshlick: 08/14/10 - Stratford, Access Road Pond -- 1 Pectoral Sandpiper. From Jeremy Faucher: 08/14/10 - Enfield Backyard - Common Nighthawk, Brown Thrasher. From Andrew Block: 08/14/10 - Norwalk, I-95, exit 16 -- 2 Common Ravens. Anyone interested in this bird should be sure to read the details in CTBirds. In particular, I ask that you read and head Scott Kruitbosch's note about the bird this evening (Subject: WT Kite Stratford Point 650-710PM), especially the part about not going into the Stratford Point grounds before they open. Scott has been watching the bird closely - and reporting his observations - since it was discovered on August 1. With the likelyhood of more birders visiting this weekend it is important to heed his advice not to spook the bird. From Steve Ballentine: 08/13/10 - Simsbury yard -- at dusk, a Common Nighthawk flyover. From Charlie Barnard Jr: 08/13/10 - Stratford, Stratford Point -- 3 Black Terns feeding near the Housatonic River's mouth (an adult in alternate plumage and 2 other birds which were either adults in basic plumage or juveniles. The latter 2 were too far from the point to be allow me to be certain of age). From Nick Bonomo: 08/13/10 - West Haven, Sandy Pt -- WHIMBREL, 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). Thanks to everyone who keeps CTBirds up to date with the latest news on this unexpected CT visitor. From Frank Gallo & Co: 08/10/10 - Milford -- Vanessa, Daniel, and I viewed the BROWN PELICAN from just west of Walnut Beach. It was catching fish along with Common Terns about a mile off shore just west of Charles Island from about 7:40 to 7:57 p.m. It then flew east low over the water, crossed in front of Charles Island, and then headed over the trees toward Milford Harbor, perhaps to roost in the area. Nick did not see it in the harbor or east of it. I'd try east of Gulf Beach in the morning.. New Haven Harbor might be a good place to start. From Nick Bonomo: 08/10/10 - Milford -- 7:37 PM, BROWN PELICAN flew east past Silver Sands State Park and headed in toward Milford harbor. From Scott Kruitbosch with Twan Leenders, Paul Fusco, Scott Vincent: 08/10/10 - Stratford, Stratford Point -- 7:00 PM, juvenile BROWN PELICAN flew close by the point. Milford -- 7:13 PM, BROWN PELICAN best view from Walnut Beach. Stratford -- 7:41 PM, BLACK TERN a sandbar viewable off Stratford Point and Short Beach. From Dave Rosgen, w/ Caitlin Loftus: 08/09/10 - Litchfield, S. Lake St. (White Memorial Foundation's Little Pond Boardwalk) -- 2 Virginia Rails, 2 Solitary Sandpipers. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). It has become rather elusive during the day. Early morning is probably the best time to look for it. Scott Kruitbosch did a good writeup on the situation on CTBirds and I strongly suggest anyone going for the bird read it (and the other reports on CTBirds). Also at Short Beach, and points unknown. It appears that be best times to see it are the early morning and the evening. If the gate is not open you can "park outside in the dirt pulloff and walk down the path near it to the beach, which is a fine viewing area." As before, you should get the full details from CTBirds. Many thanks to Scott Kruitbosch for his frequent updates. It seems to me from reading the reports that the bird has become familiar enough with the area to move around a lot, so finding it has become more challenging. Again, I am not going to try to compile the reports, as anyone interested in seeing the kite should read up on all the details on CTBirds. Even if you are not interested I suggest following up on CTBirds, if only so you can follow the links to some of the many great photos. Also, there was a request today to please drive slowly when going to Milford Point. The Audubon Center needs to stay on good terms with their neighbors, and that is a problem if visitors ignore the 25 MPH speed limit. From Hank Golet: 08/03/10 - Old Lyme, Griswold Pt -- 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 2 juv ROSEATE TERNS. 08/04/10 - Old Lyme, Lord's Cove -- Breeding plumage Common Loon early this evening. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). I am not going to list all the reports, nor try to map out its travels and habits as chronicled in those reports. Those interested in this outstanding bird need to get the complete story by reading the reports themselves on CTBirds. Here are two archives of CTBirds worth bookmarking. http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CTBD.html is easy to read, but has a limited number of messages. The earliest messages on the kite have already cycled off. http://lists.ctbirding.org/pipermail/ctbirds_lists.ctbirding.org/ is the complete and official archive. Unfortunately some messages do not "wrap" making it hard them hard to read. Now let me see if I can catch up on everything else! From Frank Gallo: 08/03/10 - Milford, Milford Point -- around 6 pm, 4 Red Knots in alternate plumage. Earlier in the Day a Royal Tern, Black Skimmer, and Peregrine Falcon were seen, as well. From Tony Hager: 08/03/10 - Middletown, Rt 9, just S. of Ex.11 -- 2 COMMON RAVENS, clearly together. From Frank Mantlik: 08/02/10 - Stratford, Housatonic River off Short Beach -- 1 Whimbrel, 2 Red Knots, 1 Western Sandpiper (adult with much retained belly and flank streaking). 08/03/10 - Stratford, Broad St. (east end), near Stratford Marina -- 1 adult Long-billed Dowitcher feeding on mud of tidal channel with 10 Short-billed Dowitchers. THe White-tailed Kite continued through the day today with some interesting twists in behavior. For full details see CTBirds, along with various blog entries linked to in CTBirds messages. I forgot to say yesterday that the White-tailed Kite is a first state record for Connecticut. The only other New England record was from Massachusetts back in 1910 - Martha's Vineyard to be precise. I will not attempt to list all the individual sighting reports, but will try to summarize the information. Those wanting more, including various links to pictures, should refer to CTBirds. Around 8:00 AM Dennis Varza was at Short Beach in Stratford where he saw and identified the White-tailed Kite, which was headed toward Stratford Point, also known as the old gun club. He got the word out as quickly as he could under the circumstances with emails to the CTBirds list. Thanks so much, Dennis! Scott Kruitbosch and Charlie Barnard got to Stratford Point next, found the bird, and started making calls, Scott was able to open the gate and stayed all day to keep it open. Thanks Scott! The kite stayed around the area of the point into the afternoon, but then started wandering. The first such trip took it out over the landfill next to Short Beach. The second time, a bit after 2:00 PM it headed up-river and out of site. Then there was a report from around Dunkin Donuts and the commercial complex next to Frash Pond. By 3:37 PM it had returned to the point. It stayed until after 4:00, left again for half an hour or so, returning around 5:15 more or less. The last report I have was that it was still being seen at 6:30 but not at 7:15. Much of the time the kite was perched. It particularly liked a sapling far out in the large grassy area of the point, north of the buildings. It also liked a particular conifer - when viewed from the area of the buildings it was to the left of a white house across the fields, the white house being to the left of a house with a brown roof. When it flew it was often accompanied by annoyed terns, which is something to watch for. It also spent time kiting - hovering in place by flying slowly into the wind while looking for food. Some directions to the site are in order. I am not going to try to give turn-by-turn directions, people are coming from too many different directions. The old gun club is almost at the end of Prospect Drive in the Lordship section of Stratford. There is a long stretch to your left with an open area of tall grass behind a chain-link fence - the old gun club grounds turned into grassland habitat. There is a sliding gate toward the end, that is the way in. If it is not open there is room for a few cars back at the start of the fence. The gate will probably be open early, but such things can not be guaranteed. Drive slowly! This link should show a map that will help. http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=41.157985885396954~-73.12468622216797&lvl=14&sty=r&ss=yp.stratford%20point~pg.1~rad.2,26332326493915 Note that it shows Short Beach and Frash Pond, as well as the airport. From Jalna Jaeger: 08/01/10 - Norwalk, 3 East Ave -- Two common ravens flying over, calling to each other. From Marty Swanhall: 08/01/10 - Woodbury, yard -- a Brown Thrasher "hunting" in yard. From Twan Leenders: 07/31/10 - Litchfield, one of the fields at Topsmead S.F. -- 5:30PM. a flock of 74 BOBOLINK. Many more heard and seen (but not counted) in other fields. All males are molting out of their spiffy black & whites. The bird flew west and was not seen again. It should be noted that there is a pattern of occurrence for male Rufous Hummingbirds in the east in July/August, so keep your eyes open. From Charlie Barnard Jr.: 07/29/10 - Stratford, Long Beach -- A Pectoral Sandpiper was among the shorebirds along the wrack line and feeding in the pools on the marsh side. There are sometimes nice numbers of shorebirds here and the variety changes a bit from one day to the next. Lately, there have been both Western (1)and White-rumped Sandpiper (1) among all the Semipalmated Sandpipers etc., although I saw neither today. This area seems best within a hour of high tide. An attendant is checking for resident stickers, but it is possible to do a U-turn before the booth and then park along the side of the road headed back East. Then, just find an opening in the phragmites and walk carefully down to the water's edge. From Angela Dimmitt 07/29/10 - Kent, Rte.7/Housatonic -- GREAT EGRET in vicinity of Marble Valley Farm (red barns) between Bull's Bridge and Kent village. From Fran and Tom Holloway: 06/20/10 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, western loop of Willard's Island Trail, SALT MARSH SPARROWS in marsh west of causeway on the trail; SEASIDE SPARROW off Cedar Island Observation Platform; LTTLE BLUE HERON in Tidal Pool east of Main Parking lot at Nature Center. 8:45-9:30 am. From Chris Loscalzo: 06/20/10 - Madison, East River Marsh -- LITTLE BLUE HERON, PURPLE MARTIN, SEASIDE SPARROW. From Bob Jones 06/20/10 - Pawcatuck -- While riding my bike at 6:20 this AM, I noticed a large white bird sitting on a rock in the Pawcatuck River, just upstream from the Riverbend Cemetary. Without BINS I couldn't ID it, but its location made me suspect Pelican, given the previous reports. When I went back at 7:10, it was gone. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). From Tina Green: 06/17/10 - Westport, Sherwood Island SP -- pair of BROWN THRASHERS. If you arrive at 8am when the park opens, you should see these birds. The thrashers like to feed in the grass just before the viewing platform and if you're very quiet and walk toward them slowly, they have allowed me to come within ten feet of them and continue watching. From Brian Webster: 06/17/10 - Stratford, Stratford yard/woods -- pair of Hooded Warblers. From Frank Mantlik: 06/16/10 - Stratford, end of Sniffen's Lane -- 5:45-6:00 pm, adult CASPIAN TERN standing on sandbar near mouth of Housatonic River. It then took off and flew north up the river as far as I could see. It may remain in the area; Milford Point, Short Beach, and Stratford Point might be areas worth checking as well. It was perched on a rock in the river. According to Google Maps, this river forms the CT/RI border in the far southeastern corner of the state. So it could easily cross the border at any time. It looks like a very narrow river to me... (And from Glenn Williams) Phil Rusch and I searched up and down the Pawcatuck River from the Connecticut side late this afternoon/evening. I left Phil at Barn Island and I checked out coves between there and Mystic without luck. There are plenty of places to hide along the river so it may well still be around. From Paul Desjardins: 06/16/10 - Suffield, Suffield Wildlife Management area -- 2 Brown Thrashers. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA).
