Hello,

I only had 30 minutes to look over Cherry Creek Reservoir. Best bird
was a Townsend's Warbler on the west side of the Lake Loop. I only
saw it because I parked there to scope the reservoir. Half a dozen
Snowy Egrets were on the east side of the lake loop. Another 5 or 6
at the Cottonwood Creek Wetlands.

Good birding!

Hello birders,

Richard Stevens and I returned to Rocky Mountain Arsenal this morning. Again we
found no owls. Warblers and Vireos were scarce. A Marsh Wren chattered in the
southeast corner of Ladora Lake. The dark morph Red-tailed Hawk was at his
favorite spot along the Rod and Gun Club trail. A Green-tailed Towhee hide in
the dead bushes along the eastern side of Ladora Lake.

Hello cobirders,

On the way to the CoBus office this morning Sue and I made a quick stop at Barr
Lake State Park. We did not find any uncommon birds around the Niedrach
Boardwalk loop. Then Sue left me at the Visitor's Center and I hiked to the
boat ramp while Sue looked for birds around and north of the ramp area. I found
a couple of Dusky Flycatchers and a Townsend's Warbler north of the banding
station. I did not find the Tennessee Warbler seen Monday at the Pioneer Trail.
A couple of Rock Wrens were along the rocks south of the boat ramp.

Seven Burrowing Owls were out at the prairie dog village 3.4 miles east of
Tower Road and 96th avenue.

Yesterday afternoon Sue and I went north to Lower Latham Reservoir to
investigate a Sharp tailed Sandpiper report from earlier in the day. We found a
pair of Pectoral Sandpipers in the area of the report, south side of Weld
County Road 48. The "reporter" has agreed that is what he had seen.

Good birding!

Hello birders,

I am really impressed with the "Colorado Birds on Maps" link. Richard and
Rebecca are keeping it up to date, moving the "pins" as the birds move.

I am sending Gary Weston's directions one last time. The site takes a little
getting use to, but is rather simple after one or two reports. If one left
clicks on a circle/sighting and zooms in, then uses the scroll on the left side
of the map, your screen will zoom in on a site. Also the "categories listing"
if clicked on will filter sightings by importance. You can see all the really
rare bird sightings by clicking on the purple category.

Enjoy!

Bryan Ehlmann

Hi birders,

More information on the new "Colorado Birds on Maps" webpage.
http://coloradobirds.crowdmap.com/main

When you go to the home page, you can increase size of Colorado map by sizing
bar on left side of map. We have it set so that you can see all Uncommon Bird
reports at once. If you click on the categories on the right side of the home
page, it filters reports for a level of sightings which are:

Level 1: Serious Rare Birds
Level 2: Found only a few times a year
Level 3: Uncommon Sightings

To add a sighting, click on "submit a report"

We have found that the best sequence for filling in a report is:

1. first type in a town closest to your bird sighting (below map) "find
location" (you must type town and "Colorado" no abbreviations

2. after google finds your town, use "+" size button to size map to "2000
feet", size listed lower left hand corner of map; skip between views

3. scroll to location of bird sighting and left click to leave flag on bird
sighting

4. then fill in "report title" Prefer: Location; Bird; County
5. fill in "description; exact location, date, any details you like
6. select one of the category levels
7. enter name; email address
8. hit "submit"
9. optional send photos or videos

At this time (beta) reports will be reviewed by administration before being put
on map. We hope to change this soon.

Thanks and enjoy!

Hello birders,

This morning 8/30, Rebecca Kosten, Sue and I went looking for the Bell's Vireo
reported by McBurney 8/26 at Barr Lake State Park, Adams County. No, we did not
see it nor any of last weekends shorebirds. We did relocate the Cassin's Vireo
just north of the banding area. A brief second, we thought it was the Bell's
Vireo. A Tennessee Warbler was seen at the lake end of the Pioneer Trail. If it
is not still there, look to the north as it was moving into the trees toward
the main trail across the abyss. One Townsend's Warbler was south of the
Pioneer Trail near mile marker 8.2.

A far off tern was not identifiable from our location at the end of the Pioneer
trail.

Yesterday, 8/29, Sue and I birded in Elbert and Douglas Counties. Our main
target birds were Dickcissels and Bobolinks. Neither were found. Late dates for
Dickcissels are the middle of September. We couldn't find any along Elbert Road
or south of Castlewood Canyon State Park. Mean late dates for Bobolink are the
middle of August. A few are usually found into early September. They appear to
be gone from the Winkler Ranch, south of Castlewood Canyon State Park. We found
3 Wild Turkeys where Castlewood Canyon Road goes from east to west from the
Winkler Ranch to the State Park.

I'm visiting from CT and spent some time in the Canon City area Friday and
Saturday. While I missed a few target birds (Gray Vireo and Pinyon Jay) there
were some interesting birds.

Highlights for me were:

** Phantom Canyon Rd. - 8/27 6:30p to 12a going up the canyon

Evening Grosbeak - 1; near the entrance to canyon - surprised to see this one.
Gray Flycatcher - 1; first 1/4 mi. into the canyon
Townsend's Solitaire - 1; flycatching from a dead tree
Common Poorwill - 1; calling about halfway up the canyon
Northern Pygmy-Owl - 1; near the Glenbrook El. 8061 sign

** Phantom Canyon Rd. - 8/28 5:30a to 9a going down the canyon

Virginia Warbler - 2 amongst several mixed species flocks

** Temple Canyon - 8/28 10a - 1pm

Gray Flycatcher - 1; 1/4 mi above Ecology Park on east side of CR 3
Clark's Nutcracker - 1; 1/4 mi before W entrance to Royal Gorge. Feeding on
acorns w/ W Scrub Jays.

** Buena Vista - from the overlook from 4p - 7pm

Williamson's Sapsucker - 1; male
Clark's Nutcracker - 1; flyover from N to S

Is there a reasonable chance to see Pinyon Jay in either Temple Canyon or Buena

Vista (or any other reliable locations) this time of year? Perhaps they
disperse
after breeding? Maybe I wasn't so lucky.

Also, on our way to Greeley from DIA on 8/26 there was a Prairie Falcon along
Rte 52 a few miles east of Hudson.

Hi all,

Weld County
We could not find any Ruffs either this morning and did not continue up to
Crow Valley Campgrounds.

Other Saturday bird sightings:

Adams County
The Cassin's Vireo is still hanging around the northeast side of Ladora
Lake. One Townsend's Warbler was also in the area. Look in cottonwoods
along the lake and just east of where the main trail cuts through a line of
trees. There was much bird activity to the north along this line of trees
but north is out of bounds to the public.

Ira Sanders reports from Barr Lake State Park: Long-billed Curlew (south
island), 2 Pectoral Sandpipers and a Willet (Niedrach trail area).

Weld County
Yesterday, Ted Floyd reported 4 Common Terns at Union Reservoir. Not the
first Common Terns of this fall season. Birders can see statewide fall bird
reports on the CoBus website.

Lake County
This morning Tim Kalbach found a Long-eared Owl at Crystal Lakes. This
should be a first county record.

Hello birders,

We just returned from Weld County. First we couldn't find any Ruffs
at Latham Reservoir or Beebe Draw. Then we couldn't find the
Connecticut Warbler at Crow Valley. One or two Townsend's Warblers
were at Crow Valley.

Good luck to anyone else looking for the birds. Please post if you find them.

Good birding!

I finally got to see an Adult Cooper's Hawk come to visit my backyard feeders
for the first time this season. It's been an unusual season for visiting birds
in my backyard. I have had them visit previous seasons on many occasions. Don't
know why I have had such a decline this season. Many sparrows and such for them
to be interested in. Maybe just not seeing them, but usually i know when they
are present. Don't know if there has been a decline in a variety of Hawks in
the Wash. Park/D.U. area this year, but usually I would see different types of
Hawks flying over, and stopping by occasionally for a Rock Pigeon and such.

But it was great to see it. He or she was very interested in the Blue Jays!
Finally gave up after grabbing a fledged House Sparrow out of the Grape Vine.

Subject: Connecticut Warbler at Crow Valley Campground, Weld; plus report from Sterling, Logan Cty
From: Rebecca Kosten <kostenrebecca AT hotmail.com>
Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2010 09:47:07 -0600
Hello cobirders,

Weld County
Randy Cross found a Connecticut Warbler yesterday at Crow Valley Campgrounds.
He found it in the trees just south of the fence south of the group picnic area
and east of where the creek leaves the park. He told Richard Stevens about it
and they relocated the bird an hour before dark. Hopper relocated the
Connecticut Warbler this morning south of the group picnic area.

Stevens found an Upland Sandpiper yesterday at the corner of Weld County Roads
96 and 69. This is about 3 miles west of Murphy's Pasture's turnoff or 4 miles
west of CR 77.

Logan County
This morning Stevens found a Golden-winged Warbler at the cemetery in Sterling.
I believe there are two cemeteries in Sterling, will get back to you if that is
true. He also saw a Mississippi Kite flying over Columbine Park, Sterling and
found a Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Overland Park. No Black-billed Cuckoos.

Good birding!

Hello

Amy Davenport and I joined Bryan and Sue Ehlmann and Jerry Petrosky at the
Burrowing Owl site at the DIAOwl Loop to watch bird migration.

Bryan thought he heard an Upland Sandpiper at 4:20 a.m.

It was an interesting time!

When Amy and I drove over to Barr Lake at 5:30 a Short eared Owl was on a
highway sign at 96th and Gun Club Road!

Good birding!

Hello birders,

Richard Stevens and I returned to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal at 6:00 AM. No
owls. Bird numbers were much reduced from what they found yesterday. Until we
returned to our car, eleven Eastern Kingbirds outnumbered the two Western
Kingbirds. Eastern finally won 11 to 6. They had 223+ Western Kingbirds
yesterday.

Uncommon birds included

Plumbeous Vireo on the north side of Mary Lake.

Townsend's Warblers
Cottonwoods along Ladora Lake at the end of the bridge over southern section.
Cottonwoods just west of Peoria and 64th streets, south side of 64th.

Cassin's Vireo
Lone cottonwood just east of where northern section of Ladora Lake trail goes
through trees. Same area as yesterday's Yellow throated Vireo. Today's vireo
had pale whitish throat, breast and belly with pale yellow flanks. Yesterday's
Yellow throated had bright yellow throat and white belly.

I returned to Denver while Richard went to Pawnee National Grasslands. On the
way up, he photographed the Pacific Loon at McIntosh Lake, Boulder County.

This morning, Brad Biggerstaff found a White eyed Vireo near the bridge at the
northwest corner of Dixon Reservoir, Fort Collins, Larimer County.

Subject: Adams County Birding (long)
From: Bryan Ehlmann <graybirder AT hotmail.com>
Date: Tue, 24 Aug 2010 22:43:37 -0600
August 24, 2010

Rich Stevens called me up at 5:00 AM and suggested that conditions were good
today for a fallout of migrating birds. Rain and mild winds out of the north
suggested just that!

We arrived at Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Adams County just as it opened at 6:00 AM
and listened for owls at the old Governor's Row area. While many birds were
heard, owls were not among them. It is still a little too light at 6:00 AM with
sunrise 6:19 AM. This undertaking has better success when it is completely dark
out.

After sunrise, we started out in a counterclockwise trip around the Lake Ladora
trail. We circled a wide path around the southwest corner where 49
Double-crested Cormorants were roosting.

Our first interesting encounter was the bird of the day, a Pacific/Winter Wren.
It called several times and popped out of the brush north of the lone
cottonwood tree where the trail goes from east to south. We had about a
10-second look at its light brown throat. The call and its throat led us to
believe that it was a Pacific Wren.

Continuing south, a flock of Lark Sparrows, two Song Sparrows and two Common
Yellowthroats came out of the leafless brushes a little farther south of the
Pacific Wren sighting.

Two Soras called from the cattails at the southwest corner of Ladora. A
Townsend's Warbler loosely accompanied a flock of nine Yellow Warblers. While a
Virginia Rail called from 20 yards east of here.

The woodpiles along the south side of Lake Ladora were full of birds. Nineteen
House Wrens, the most I have seen at one time, were found along with 39
Chipping Sparrows, 1 Lincoln's Sparrow, 4 Song Sparrows and several hundred
Red-winged Blackbirds.

Another flock of Yellow Warblers, seven this time, an Orange-crowned Warbler
and our second Townsend's Warbler of the day were in the tall cottonwoods north
of the cattails at the southeast corner of Ladora.

A third Townsend's Warbler was at the northwest corner of the trail, just below
the Lower Derby Lake dam. The dead snag at this corner held 68 Western
Kingbirds! By the time we would get back to the parking lot on the west side of
Ladora, another 103 Western Kingbirds were counted.

Continuing around we hit the mother lode where the trail goes through/under a
group of cottonwoods. A small Mexican Locust grove is along the north side of
these trees. The bird count included 17 Yellow Warblers, 9 Western Wood-pewees,
4 Western Tanagers, and a pair of White-breasted Nuthatches, 2 Orange-crowned
Warblers and a male Downy Woodpecker.

The most interesting birds were an Olive-sided Flycatcher and a Yellow-throated
Vireo. Our fourth Townsend's Warbler of the day was also there.

Except for a few scattered cottonwoods, the trail leaves any dense riparian
area here. So we turned around and walked to the Rod and Gun Club bird blind.
Another 57 Western Kingbirds were found along this trail. A flock of 29 Lark
Sparrows was seen also.

Nine Yellow Warblers, one Orange-crowned Warbler and a Black-and-white Warbler
were around the bird blind.

There were no birds at the Havana Ponds. In fact, we did not see one Gull in
six hours. With all the warblers, we did not see one Yellow-rumped Warbler the
whole day. In addition, we could just imagine how many Western Kingbirds were
on the Arsenal today as our count was just a small portion of the prairie. Many
of the Western Kingbirds were perched on the miner's candles and not in the
cottonwoods.

Two female or young Lark Buntings flew around the parking lot upon our return.

The skies started to clear before noon and we lost our great cloud cover. Still
we decided to go over to Barr Lake State Park.

We split up at Barr Lake in order to cover more ground. While Richard walked
the Niedrach trail, mile 0.5 and north to the boat ramp at mile 7.5, I parked
at the boat ramp and walked from mile 7.5 east and north to the north end of
the dam, mile 6.0.

Richard relocated the Plumbeous Vireo reported yesterday by Jerry Petrosky. He
also relocated a Northern Waterthrush reported yesterday near the banding
station by McBurney. A Townsend's Warbler was just north of the banding area.

Meanwhile I found a Black-and-white Warbler below the dam. It was in the tall
cottonwoods south of the Old Stone House. A Virginia Rail and five Common
Yellowthroats were along the outlet canal.

Richard picked me up at the Stone House and we circled around to the southwest
corner of the reservoir. I dropped Richard off at mile 2.5 and continued around
to the north side, parking the car at mile 4.0.

Richard walked toward the car and found another Townsend's Warbler at mile 3.5,
along with 9 additional Yellow Warblers. At a similar time, I found a Tennessee
Warbler at mile 4.5. The many gulls here appeared to be Ring-billed and a few
California Gulls, nothing uncommon.

When I again reached mile 6.0, Richard picked me up. It was about 4:00 PM, with
plenty of daylight remaining we decided to drive the 40+ miles northeast and
look for the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher reported on 8/21 by Bruce Cyganowski at
the northeast side of Jackson Lake State Park, Morgan County. Somewhere I saw a
link to a photo of the bird. When I find it, I will put it on the CoBus Trip
Report blog.

We gave it a good try, but never found the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. At dusk,
we heard an Eastern Screech-Owl calling while we waited for any Short-eared
Owls that might fly by the western Campgrounds. No Long-eared Owls answered our
recordings.

We picked up Sue and Rebecca and are headed to the DIA Owl Loop to listen and
look for migrating birds!

Enjoy all!

certain of the species. It appears to have no eye ring and the belly and breast
appear to be white. It seems smaller than most flycatchers.

Subject: Guanella Pass and Mount Bierstadt Clear Creek County
From: Gary Zeeto <gzeeto AT yahoo.com>
Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 09:47:02 -0700 (PDT)
Hello

Yesterday some friends wanted to climb Mount Bierstadt. On the trip up we ran
into Ptarmigan about a third of the way up. There's no way to explain how to
relocate them. But there also was a pair 20 yards below the Rosalie Trail
directly in the middle of the section that runs north to south along the hill
south-southeast of the parking lot.

A Prairie Falcon flew over while we looked at two Brewer's Sparrows that
sounded and looked like they could be Timberline Brewer's. We also found a
MacGillivray's Warbler and White-crowned Sparrows on same hillside.

Searches for Three-toed Woodpeckers at the Guanella pass' gate were
unsuccessful. There were no audible signs of Northern Pygmy-Owls or Northern
Saw-whet Owls at the two Campgrounds.

Good birdin'

I visited all sides Timnath Reservoir this morning.

There was a "possible" Neotropic Cormorant out there--long distance view it
just seemed visibly smaller than the other hundreds/thousands of his kin
(Double-cresteds) next to him. Out on spit; viewed in the new residential
neighborhood.

Date: Sat, 21 Aug 2010 09:44:42 -0600

From "The Backyard Bird Bulletin", a publication of the National Bird Feeding
Society:

***********************
Assist in a Scientific Study: Evening Grosbeaks

The National Bird-Feeding Society is assisting in a scientific study on Evening
Grosbeak subspecies. The study is being performed by Aaron Haiman, a graduate
student at the University of California, Davis. Aaron is studying how many
subspecies of grosbeaks exist, where they occur, and what the differences
between them are. Groups of birds will be found throughout their range and
banded, measured, recorded, and have blood samples collected from them.

The first step in this project is finding the birds, and since they are nomadic
this can be challenging. If you see Evening Grosbeaks coming to your bird
feeders, especially if they are there regularly and for a while, please contact
Aaron at anhaiman AT ucdavis.edu. Aaron has permits to band in California, Oregon,
and Colorado and is looking for people and birds in those states. He will be in
Colorado in early September.

Participants will be asked to contact Aaron when they have Evening Grosbeaks at
their feeders and give an estimate on the number of grosbeaks visiting the bird
feeders. Also, participants will be asked to give permission for Aaron to visit
your feeders and band the Evening Grosbeaks.

If you are interested in this study, please e-mail Aaron at
anhaiman AT ucdavis.edu. In your correspondence include your name and address, and
he will be in contact with you shortly.

Also, if you are interested in assisting with other bird feeding studies,
please go to the NBFS contact page and indicate in the comment box your
interest in participating in future bird feeding research.

Enjoy feeding the birds!

Biology at Millikin University and Director of Research and Development for the

Hello cobirders,

There were 14 Snowy Egrets, 2 Baird's Sandpipers, 1 Solitary Sandpiper at the
southeast corner of Cherry Creek State Park this evening. A dozen or so
California Gulls with dark mantles. One gull was much darker the the California
Gulls, but a similar size. I didn't have my scope along and could not see the
bill well enough to know if it was the Lesser Black backed Gull. Also here
dozens of Pelicans, 2 Great Blue Herons and 3 Black crowned Night Herons. Quite
a bit more of the sand spit is exposed. Many more gulls than the past few weeks
are now coming in near dusk.

I looked for Clark's Grebes for a friend, only found 2 Western Grebes.

Good Birding!

Hello birders,

I stopped by Cherry Creek State Park this evening. The Lesser Black backed Gull
was on the southeast sand spit until two dog walkers scare it away. It flew
west. The only shorebirds were Killdeer. Among sixteen Snowy Egrets and two
Great Blue Herons, one Cattle Egret. Was he out of place? A want-a-be Snowy
Egret?

Hello cobirders;

It's finally here! Colorado Birds on Maps! BEST of ALL (see below)!

Direct link: http://coloradobirds.crowdmap.com/main
or access from Colorado Birding Society's home:
http://coloradobirdingsociety.net16.net

You can access Uncommon Bird Reports on a Map if so interested. The red dots
show recent bird reports across Colorado. Click on a dot and you will see
location, bird and county. You can zoom in on map to get a better location or
even closer for a "birds eye" view and gps waypoints. You can add comments if
so desired.

At the bottom of the homepage is a list of most recent Uncommon Bird Sightings.
Click on them for additional details (incident report, reporter, etc) and a map
of location. Zoom in for closer looks and gps waypoints.

Bird sightings offer categories/levels of interest.

red (all)
purple (serious rare birds)
blue (seen a few times a year in Colorado)
black (uncommon sightings)

Clicking on a category will filter for that category alone.

BEST of ALL!

Individual birders can submit bird sightings! Just click on "submit a report".

Report Title:
try and format: location, then bird, then county

Description:
details: bird or more than one species, more detail on location of bird(s)

Categories:
see description above on categories

Find Location:
pick city closest to bird sighting, hit find location, then zoom in for
detailed map and pin point bird location. Click on spot where you saw the bird.

Afterwards, then refine location name by naming exact location (I.e. Bonny
Reservoir or Big Johnson Reservoir, etc).

If you have video or photo you can upload them.

Optional:
However we hope you will submit your name. Really optional: your email address.

Then hit "submit"

Other features:

"get alert" pick a location circle that you are in and provide email address
and you will receive email notice of Uncommon Bird Sightings

"contact us": send additional information to us if you like or ask us a
question

"home" takes you back to main Colorado Map and Bird Sightings

COMING SOON

As you can see, we are only two days old and still in beta testing. In the near
future we can offer report submissions and reports by cell phone, email
submissions; RSS feeds, and possibly other avenues.

I have enjoyed playing with the code and offering this option to Birders.
However, I think the Colorado Birding Society's homepage is more useful to
myself.

We will see how this goes and whether to continue it. An option to get GPS
waypoints may be useful. The map will zero in on what area of the state has the
most Uncommon Bird Reports.

NOTE: At this time, all reports submitted have to be approved by an
Administrator. One of us should be around to do that about every couple of
hours. In the future, we plan to keep the "verified" report option and make
"approved" option self monitored. Again, we are in beta and will see how things
go.

TO Change the subject: I have also put a 100 year database and current year
database of Colorado Bird Reports on the internet. They are temporarily
password protected. Just about everything we have done to protect the security
of these databases has been circumvented by ourselves. I would appreciate
anyone's input on how to increase security on "htdoc" files!

Continued Good Birding!

Hello birders,

Today,Richard Stevens and I returned from seeing the Orange-billed Nightingale
Thrush near Savoy, South Dakota. It’s been there for many weeks now and could
be there for a while. It took an hour to find, but is not far from the highway.
If you're not going from Julesburg like us, it’s about 400 miles, six hours
from Denver.

We stopped at Bonny Reservoir on the way back to Denver. It had been a couple
of hectic days and our visit at Bonny Reservoir was during the hottest and
windiest part of the day. Few birds were found. We didn’t feel like walking
and couldn’t see any shorebirds from the road. A Northern Cardinal was in
Foster’s Grove Campgrounds. A Pine Warbler was at the eastern side of Wagon
Wheel Campgrounds. An unidentified Empidonax flycatcher was very yellow and
green.

Good Birding

Subject: BIRDS FALLING FROM SKY, DYING IN LAKEWOOD...
From: ANGIE KOEHLER <angelbunnyluv AT hotmail.com>
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 2010 01:07:32 +0000
Hello Cobirders,

I don't know if any of you happen to watch Channel 7 News this evening, but
anyway, I found it to be very disturbing! There was a news report about "Birds
Falling from Sky, dying in Lakewood", (it's also on their web site if you want
to read about it). It was first reported that they were Starlings. They were
NOT! They happen to be the Common Grackle that I seen on their news report.
Lakewood Animal Control who was on scene said they appeared to have been
poisoned. About 20 or more litterally falling out of the sky that was reported
from a concerned lady who was devastated at what she saw. It was horrible to
watch as some birds were being filmed, dying a slow painful and horrible death!
After I watched and listened to the report, I had to contact Channel 7 News and
let them know that they were NOT Starlings as first reported, but in fact a
Migratory Bird that is protected under the Federeal Migratory Bird Act, known
as The Common Grackle. After calling channel 7 News, I went on their Web site
and did notice that they did update that detail. I am now hoping that many of
you Birders out there will let your voices be heard, that some further
investigation should be done, since they are a protected species.

I am going to contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tomorrow and let them
know about this. I hope that U.S. Fish and Wildlife will do some of their own
investigating and contact Lakewood Animal Control who were on scene and
collected the dying/dead birds, and have them tested to see if this was in fact
a case of poisoning, or the possibility of something else going on. My gut
feeling is telling me that they were poisoned...after seeing one bird foaming
out of it's mouth from excruciating pain and dying a slow death. I appoligise
for this horrible posting, but I feel that it is necessary for all of us who
have a strong love for wildlife, especially birds, that our voices need to be
heard. Too many disasters are killing so many birds and it's got to STOP!!

Oh! not to mention the so called "green algae" that is now pouring into the
platte! WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?? Some birds were taken to Wild B.I.R.D. with
green algae on them, and it's actually staining the hands of the Rehabbers who
are cleaning them up, trying to save them. GREEN ALGAE....HMMMM....

Hi birders,

I don't know why I thought the Rocky Mountain Arsenal was closed on Friday and
not today? Monday is the only day of the week they are closed to birders.
Instead I walked Buckley Road from 88th avenue to 56th and back. Two Sage
Thrashers are still near the cement barrier about halfway down the walk. They
flew to both counties, Adams inside the arsenal and Denver east of Buckley.
Burrowing Owls were in both counties. Not much else to report, I will leave you
to birding!

Hello birders,

I went looking for the vireo and warblers reported yesterday at Rocky Mountain
Arsenal. I did find the Townsend's Warbler below the Derby Lake dam. It was in
the cottonwoods next to where the trail heads west back toward the Visitor's
Center. No Luck with the Cassin's Vireo. Nothing unusual at the Rod and Gun
Club Pond. A dark morph Red-tailed Hawk was interesting on the trail to the
Bird Blind.

Hello cobirders,

If I may, I would like to point out a few additional features on the Colorado
Birding Society's website:

http://coloradobirdingsociety.net16.net

On the home page you can find a link to report Rare Birds to the Records
Committee. Many birders have taken advantage of the link and we hope you all
will continue.

From the "Paper Report Forms" link, you can find a link to report Nesting birds
from the internet. Again, thanks to the many birders who have sent in reports.
You can also download a printable nesting report form if you prefer that
method.

The "Bird Photos" Link accesses recent bird sightings and a library of
previously photographed Birds of Colorado. The Most Recent Bird link has a
library of birds that is added to every three or four days. Birds are then
moved to their respective families to give other photographers and birds a
chance to be showcased.

The "finding colorado birds" link offers suggestions for the best locations to
find a bird species.

"Seasonal Bird Sightings" lists the uncommon bird reports for the season.

Don't forget the "Statewide Bird Trips" link!

Give the website a look if you haven't! One of the best!

Subject: Colorado's Bird Checklists have been updated!
From: Jerry Petroski <jerrypetroski AT peoplepc.com>
Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2010 18:46:44 -0400 (EDT)
Hello birders,

For those who haven't noticed. The Colorado Bird checklists including the
County lists were updated Monday, 8/9. They reflect the new AOU changes to
names and bird order from the 51st supplement to the 7th Checklist. Also any
first county records accepted by the Colorado Bird Records Board in the past
year have also been added (see September's upcoming "Colorado Field Notes").

AOU changes have split Whip-poor-wills into Eastern Whip-Poor-will and Mexican
Whip-Poor-will; both of which have occurred in Colorado. Winter Wrens were
split into Pacific Wren and Winter Wren. Both have been recorded in Colorado.

You can find the various checklists at the "Bird Checklist" link on the CoBus
home:

Coloradobirdingsociety.net16.net

The many lists include
Statewide list with scientific names and four letter bird codes (both word and
PDF versions)

Statewide list that counts bird sightings when entered (excel version)
Statewide list that prints on one piece of paper (both sides)

By accessing County bird sites; Birding Locations link, you can see and
download County checklists. Subscribers to "Colorado Field Notes" will receive
a self-opening "County List" disk with September's "Colorado Field Notes". The
disk will include County Lists and directions to birding locations.

You can't find more comprehensive and historically accurate Checklists of
Colorado Birds.

We have studied Checklists produced by the CFO and found many errors in their
own records. Also while spending 2 months conducting nesting studies on the
western slope, the past three years, we studied the original submissions to the
old CFO Colorado Bird Records Committee. We sent out dozens letters to birders
who submitted reports which were turned down as the only reason that "the bird
has never been seen in Colorado". Many birders resubmitted reports for review
to us!

Great birding to all!

Arapahoe County
I returned to Aurora Reservoir for a bike ride Saturday morning. The Common
Loon was back. Where was he on my last two trips? No rare gulls or terns. The
only shorebirds were Killdeer.

Hello cobirders;

After owling all Thursday night and not getting home until noon, I needed a few
hours of sleep. Woke up at 4:00 pm and read about the Little Blue Herons report
at Cherry Creek Reservoir (Arapahoe County). I drove over and found 4 Snowy
Egrets at the Cottonwood Creek Loop. However, with the high cattails, not all
of the wetlands can be seen. Identification to separate juvenile Little Blue
Herons from Snowy Egrets can require close inspection. A Green Heron was seen
along the very southern edge (while I was scoping from the northern side near
the outlet canal). Nine Black-crowned Night-Herons and 1 Great Blue Heron were
also there.

I walked over to the Bellevue Wetlands (new wetlands east of the model airplane
field). The water here is quite high, not much shore. One Solitary Sandpiper
walked the little bit of exposed land.

Fourteen additional Snowy Egrets were found at the southeastern sand spit of
the lake proper. When I approached for a closer look at the egrets, another
Solitary Sandpiper was seen.

Rebecca Kosten was waiting at Rocky Mountain Arsenal and I had to leave. We
biked outside the eastern side (Buckley Road from 56th to 88th avenue). Rocky
Mountain Arsenal is in Adams County; east side of Buckley is mostly Denver
County (south of 74th avenue).

Burrowing Owl count was down to 3 owls (2 in Denver County, 1 Adams).
Swainson's Hawk count was 9 including one intermediate adult. American Kestrels
5 and 1 Ferruginous Hawk.

Movement of birds was quite evident. We saw 287 Common Grackles, 160+
Red-winged Blackbirds and 51 Western Kingbirds.

Three Sage Thrashers were around the fenced in pipe line near the cement
barrier about halfway along the trip. Other birds included 1 Loggerhead Shrike,
1 House Wren, 3+ Grasshopper Sparrows, 1 first year Bullock's Oriole, 1 adult
Black-headed Grosbeak, 21 Horned Larks and 1 Song Sparrow.
