Various Christmas Bird Counts were conducted during the past ten days
with highlights of several of these counts cited below.

The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary count included a
POMARINE JAEGER, 66 COMMON MURRES, 99 RAZORBILLS, and 4 ATLANTIC
PUFFINS.

Highlights from the Greater Boston census included 62 WOOD DUCKS, a
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, 413 HOODED MERGANSERS, 34 DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS, 40 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 33 COOPER'S HAWKS, 7 BALD EAGLES, 2
WHITE-WINGED DOVES, 4 SNOWY OWLS, 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 22 BELTED
KINGFISHERS, 5 MERLINS, 8 PEREGRINE FALCONS, an OVENBIRD, and 5
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS.

On the Quincy count there was a CANVASBACK, 303 RING-NECKED DUCKS, an
ICELAND GULL, 4 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 3 AMERICAN PIPITS, and 96 SNOW
BUNTINGS.

The Newport County/Westport count featured 177 GADWALLS, 49 HARLEQUIN
DUCKS, 3 BROWN THRASHERS, a BLUE-HEADED VIREO, a BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER, and a NASHVILLE WARBLER.

The Worcester census registered a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, 4 SANDHILL
CRANES, and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR.

Reports from the Parker River Refuge on Plum Island included 10
RED-NECKED GREBES, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 52 RAZORBILLS, 2 BLACK
GUILLEMOTS, and 13 CROSSBILLS.

Miscellaneous reports this week included the continued presence of a
PINK-FOOTED GOOSE in the fields along Rt. 133 in Ipswich; SNOW GEESE
in Beverly, Danvers, and Topsfield; a REDHEAD at the Cambridge
Reservoir in Waltham; a TUFTED DUCK at Kenoza Lake in Haverhill; a
GREAT EGRET at West Island in Fairhaven; 3 SANDHILL CRANES at Franklin
Park Golf Course in Boston; 2 WHITE-WINGED DOVES in the Boston Fenway
Community Garden; a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on Choate Island in Essex; 2
PAINTED BUNTINGS at Nantucket; and 18 RED CROSSBILLS at Salisbury.
